I watched NASA TV coverage of the Curiosity mars rover landing last night.

Saturday afternoon Ed Tanner died.

This landing is extremely impressive, just from an Engineering Standpoint. Mostly it is a demonstration, that we can in fact deliver a large payload to Mars and land it both carefully and successfully on the planet's surface. It might find some interesting things digging through the comparatively recently disrupted layers of martian land, but more than anything else, this proves that we can, potentially, do a lot more.

More people should have been watching this, it is either one of the most important events in human history or one of its largest missed opportunities.
