So is it really all that unrealistic that when someone does something heinous enough to warrant being cut out of your life, you require them to understand what they did that hurt you and possibly show some remorse before letting them back in?

Yeah, generally once you've hit "heinous" with me, that's it.
If they want back in;
1) Clearly the haven't learned anything
2) You are setting up for another hit if you do

I think it's the only way - and I think that people kicked out can, at least potentially, be let in. People change; situations change; understanding changes on all sides.
