John 9:10-11 mannie711 March 22 2010, 12:57:14 UTC
"10Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

11Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. "

Just because if I didn't argue with you I think the world might end :-)

ahh, but all this says is that God's power is greater than Pilate's, and that Pilate's is granted by God. However, Pilate still has autonomy as a government official that is sanctioned by God.

or

All government decisions are predestined by God, so opposing the Governement is opposing God (though I beleive the former not the latter)

ahh, but you see, discussions like this are never truly aimed at the fundies, for they are identity foreclosed and no argument will ever sway them. They are, rather, aimed at people who are still questioning and for whom but whose only information is being present from the viewpoint of the fundies. By presenting a counter argument, you can sway them. And since people tend to listen more to and about people who are like them presenting the in-group argument of Jesus supporting the separation of church and state will be stronger. (this is also why I get disappointed with people who don't speak out against bad behavior within their own groups. because its one thing to have a belief I don't believe in, but something completely different to allow for abusive behavior, and by being part of the in group, they have more power than I do to actually affect the bad behavior)
