i was totally confused about why everyone was putting yellow ribbons on their cars, 'cause where was the money going from those sales? i mean, really, was anyone actually supporting the soldiers or was it just another way for conservatives to pretend they care? we all support the soldiers, but mostly we support BRINGING THEM HOME and paying them ( Read more... )

My mom gets her ribbons through the national guard, where the proceeds go directly to care package creation. Things like socks, bottles of water, cigarettes that sort of thing for the lads over seas.

see, i'm totally for that. and i'm happy that there exists a direct channel for the money in that situation.

but the social epidemic that followed was ridiculous. if you didn't have a [magnetic] yellow ribbon on your car (or a ribbon-ribbon on your backpack) within three days you were branded unamerican and unpatriotic. i don't think i've ever seen a product in such high short-term demand that didn't have to do with A/V pop culture.

then again, i guess i shouldn't be all that surprised... politics and trendiness do criss-cross each other's path once every decade or so.
