fic for posterity--stanalone ruby sherman vivian

JOURNAL Entry:

They are all watching me. Well, at least they were until attention turned back to the whole Jon, Ruby, and Tyler fiasco. I can almost hear them placing bets on who will be the one to take me down when not if I fail to complete my flip. It is going to happen, but on my terms, as it should be. If I can manage it without him, then I will. Luke; smug little pup. Of course, so am I a pup, but not for much longer.

I am going way for however long it takes to see the world. I do not care if I am dragged back, for I will have achieved my goal and centered myself. I will not pull a Ruby. I know my place and I know where I belong even if I have to set this time aside for myself. Call it my one indulgence.

Double checking her traveler's kit of passport and tickets and class schedule for the school she will be attending Summer quarter, Sophia tucks it all away into her hiding spot and heads out to the dinner, ignoring stares as she steps behind the counter to ready herself for her shift.

"Don't take that Sophia, it's still good," Sherman calls out as he reaches toward the plate that Sophia is taking from the booth next to him.

"No sense in wasting a good steak...even if it is almost well done," he chuckles, flipping a quarter between his fingers as Sophia sets the plate down in front of him.

"Going to order anything today Sherman or are you just saving our other customers from an early grave due to high fat and cholesterol again," Sophia smiles, setting the plate down. Though she could have sworn, there was no one at that booth a few moments ago. She's used to the shaman appearing out of nowhere.

"I'll be back with your coffee in just a moment," she adds quickly.

Waving his hand and making a pishaw sound, "take your time, but can you bring back a menu...you know the memory is the first thing to go ," he replies, chuckling as if he just amused himself.

Making a tsk-tsk sound, she gives and amused grin before walking away. Out of the corner of her eye, her peripheral visions catches Buddy and a few of his thugs walking into the diner. An everyday occurrence almost; nothing new as everyone passes through here on a daily basis at one point or another. Maybe she just never noticed before she made the silent decision to give herself permission to leave this town for a few short month and as she has not flipped yet, no one can say a damn word to her about it...hopefully.

'Just lay low Sophia...stay under their radar,' she tells herself as she makes her way back to the table with coffee and menu in hand.

Maybe she just never noticed before she made the silent decision to give herself permission to leave this town for a few short months. And as she has not flipped yet, no one can say a damn word to her about it...hopefully.

Sherman misses nothing. Even as he concentrates on savoring the steak, he notices Sophia's reactions, however minute, toward Buddy and his crew entering. Granted, there really was nothing that could remotely interest Buddy...scratch that, as there is always the matter of sex with the male of their species. Any species for that matter. Question was, is why she reacted that way.

Nothing like good old fashioned curiosity to keep the youthful juices flowing, he muses to himself.

"Thank you Sophia, Would you per chance have any cream...fresh?" Eyes peruse her posture, noticing her attempts at remaining unaffected.

"Cream, fresh, right, be right back. Menu laid down and coffee set, Sophia walks back toward the counter with an expression that is as smooth as butter.

"Here you go Sherman. Have you decided on what you want yet?"

"Now that is a tricky question Sophia. Should I ask for more than I need or only what I can handle.”

Eyes reveal the hidden meaning behind the response, but only vaguely. Knowing Sophia's penchant for self-denial, the girl will probably miss the point.

"Barbecue rib platter please."

"Only what you can handle is best or so I hear. Otherwise half eaten steaks get left upon the table," Sophia's mouth quirks; a bit if a half smile. She ignores any other meaning behind Blackstone's words.

A small shrugging of shoulders before a sip of coffee is taken.

"Have you talked to your father about taking the class? It's only a matter of time Sophia." There, that ought to take some starch out of her stance.

"But not time yet," Sophia calls out over her shoulder, turning to leave quickly before the flushing in her face can be noticed. While it has not happened yet, there have been a few narrow escapes if she is honest with herself. Looking over to Buddy's section at a side-glance, Sophia's skin flushes even more before disappearing behind kitchen doors.

Journal entry: I almost failed with Ruby. Her position and status still up in the air, I find myself keeping a stronger eye on Sophia. She's been quiet of late-too quite. Honestly, what goes on in her head is a mystery to me.

I have it on good authority that Tyler is leaving our pack, eventually taking others with him. Let him have a few...even Buddy and good riddance. They will all come back eventually, but not her-not Sophia. I cannot afford to lose her. Mathew will hate me for it, but she is not leaving Wolf Lake ever, I will take the pup down myself if she tries to leave.

From here

Coming in from the main lobby, Vivian ambles slowly, nodding to those who comment to her or make other gestures of respect. Seeing Sherman by himself, she takes a moment to place a hand upon his shoulder.

"Hello there stranger, mind if I have a seat?"

"Well, hello there beautiful. As long as you don't mind an old science teacher hitting on you," Sherman grins generously laughing before sipping on his coffee.

Offering the last bite, he winks. "Some steak?"

"I'd prefer some answers Sherman. How is Sophia holding up? I hear tales that she told her father that she isn't leaving, but I just have a feeling she's hiding something," Vivian comments casually, taking the offered bite.

"You know, we really have to get the cook to start making these a bit more rare," she adds putting the fork down carelessly.

"Is she going to turn soon or not?"

"Patience Vivian. You'd be better off asking if she's still a virgin. Of course that is a definite yes if you just use your natural sense of smell. Then again, you could just ask her yourself, she'll be back with my order any minute. Are you going to order anything?"

Back through the double doors with Sherman's rib platter in hand, Sophia eyes Vivian warily. 'Great, just great. Either it's him or her hanging around either here or at my house, watching my evry....as if I am going flip for the first time right in front of.....'

"Here you go Sherman. Mrs. Cates...would you like a menu?"

If Vivian didn't know better, didn't have the manners of her youth instilled in her, she'd reach out right now and slap the girl.

"Why Sophia, you know that isn't necessary. I know everything on the menu. Porterhouse rare sweetheart and do tell your father, that I'll be by at around seven tonight for dinner," Vivian, replies with a saccharine sweetness usually reserved for outsiders that she occasionally interacts with.
