Damn you, and your lettuce, too

Benn's birthday was last week. After solid weeks of me trying to convince him that he should get to pick his own birthday activities on his birthday, rather than just sit around the house like we always do, Benn finally chose to go to a BC Lions (that's football, apparently) game and then walk across the street to try the Atlantic Trap and Grill. This story is so sad. D: This is exactly how I feel when I leave Wisconsin and get anything cheese or dairy-related. I mean honestly, the things that pass for cheese curds in some places! Or, you know, order anything and find it not covered in cheesy glory like I feel it should be. XD

Benn has family in Wisconsin. We should totally go so I can sample the cheese.

"Except that while Chinese American cuisine has taken real Chinese cuisine and added three sides of deep fried glory, Damn Vancouver has gone and REMOVED THE GREASE AND COVERED THE THING IN LETTUCE."

Comedy gold. This made me laugh out loud. And I guess this isn't the time to tell you that this morning I have raging heartburn because we had donair pizza last night. From the pizza shop next door. ;)

There is an article in this month's Maclean's about some Canadian model living in New York who has started up a poutine restaurant. Except that the poutine is all fancy and complicated so that it appeals to New Yorkers. Quebec may vote to separate after all if they find out what this happy asshole (Anglo!) is up to.

Me again, I just looked at the website and menu for this travesty of an East Coast theme restaurant. It looks like these guys know as much about Maritime "traditional" favourites as the kitchen staff at East Side Mario's knows about Little Italy - and I'm guessing you never see Italians sitting next to the fibreglass Statue of Liberty going "hey, badda boom badda bing".

Le lame. But at least I know that for my retirement I could move out west and serve actual Maritime food to starving ex pats.

Benn and I were seriously lamenting the fact that we have zero desire to run our own business, or we'd show these clowns how it's done.

Dude. That is just NOT cool! But you gave it the ol' college try, so good on you. I really miss garlic fingers too. I try making my own, but can't seem to get it right. The sauce I have down pat, but the fingers are hard to figure out -- what exactly do they put ON there? 'Cause garlic butter doesn't cut it. And I fail at pizza dough, but I figure I just haven't found the right recipe yet. Must keep trying...

I remember the meal hall at Mt A used to have "make your own pizza" night, and we used to be able to make passable garlic fingers just by throwing a bunch of cheese, garlic powder, and bacon bits onto the dough. It wasn't great, but it was still better than that shit we ate last week.

I think we're really going to have to try and make our own. We'll serve them to our friends, who keep saying "psh. We have that stuff here!"

My sister has great recipes for the meat and sauce from a woman who used to work at the pizzeria in Shubenacadie. I can obtain them for you, if you like.
