Wanted to actually participate in Sabriel Tuesday this week, but I couldn't think of anything to write.
insertcode11 was awesome and prompted me with "a proposal" and this is what came out of it. :D
~*~*~
Sam doesn't understand what could possibly have Gabriel so fidgety - he doesn't think he's ever seen the Archangel look anything less than confident without reason, even back in the last stretch of the Apocalypse. But Gabriel's nervous now, shoulders shifting and twitching and Sam can imagine how restless his wings must be moving around for the angel to actually react physically. It's unsettling, seeing the one who keeps him grounded so on edge for no reason and he can feel his own jaw twitching from grinding his teeth unconsciously.
It goes on most of the day. Sam wishes he knew what was causing it so that he could fix it but he doesn't. By the time Gabriel says his name and tells him he has something they need to talk about, Sam has gotten himself so worked up that he was convinced the Archangel was about to break up with him. Maybe he's been too clingy lately, with Dean gone with his angel so often. Maybe it was a heat of the moment kind of relationship, maybe Gabriel hadn't expected them to live through the Apocalypse and now he realizes he's got a whole eternity of a future ahead of him and he just doesn't see a place for Sam in it.
So it's a complete shock when Gabriel snaps them into one of his houses - Sam's favorite with the balcony and an amazing view of the stars. The little round table is decked out in something that smells delicious and there are tall white candles lit, flames flickering a little in the light breeze, but not going out. He blinks wide eyes that only grow wider at the suddenly smug smile on Gabriel's face. Nothing of his earlier nerves are showing anymore when he steps closer to Sam and takes his hand.
"I'd go down on one knee, but that might be a little awkward given the obvious reasons," Gabriel snarks, waving his unoccupied hand at the both of them.
"Yeah," Sam chuckles, feeling out of breath though he's barely moved a muscle.
Gabriel squeezes their hands together and that's when he finally feels something cool against his skin, between them. He swallows and looks down, unwilling to even blink when Gabriel pulls back just enough to let him see the gold band. When he glances back up at Gabriel's face, the angel has an eyebrow raised in expectation and Sam can't help but roll his eyes.
"Well?"
Gabriel laughs and something in Sam's chest warms even more than when he realized just what was happening here. "Well," the angel drawls slowly, "How do you feel about a winter wedding, Sammy?"
The grin on his face must be blinding but Sam wouldn't lose it even if he could.
"Sounds perfect to me, Gabriel."
Gabriel smiles like and slides the ring on Sam's finger without preamble, looking for all the world like he'd known Sam's answer before Sam had even known what was going on.
"Good."
