Drabble: First Watch

Written for avatar_500 prompt #71: Equal. This will potentially be from a larger series crossover that I'm still trying to work out the story for. Contains spoilers up to Fullmetal Alchemist Chapter 50.

Summary: It's not magic, it's science. Sokka has a surprising conversation with a suit of armor.

Interesting crossover idea! I don't think the Avatar world's bending would challenge the Law of Equivalent Exchange at all, since the amount of material stays the same. It's not even changed to different material, other than through natural processes (e.g. fire burns stuff). The only missing ingredient, from an alchemist's point of view, is the transmutation circle or pattern--benders act like homunculi or alchemists who saw The Door in the instantaneous effect they have. Ed would probably conclude that something in the benders' genes, their outlooks and personalities, and the stances they use interact to produce an effect much like a transmutation circle.

As an aside I wonder if Ed and Al thought the ATLA world was a part of Xing, if you've seen the manga or the new anime. :)

I agree. Ed's theory is that everyone can potentially bend, but it's easier for some than others. Because they don't know how bending works, only those who intuitively get it are the ones who can bend and master their element. Since Xing alchemy is based off of the flow of energy, that can be the reason the stances are important and different for each discipline.

Pretty much. They landed in the Earth Kingdom, so it was easy to think they were in Xing from their experience with Ling... then the Gaang showed them a map. I'm taking this from when Gluttony tries to swallow them all to get to Mustang, with the idea that he does succeed in swallowing Ed and Al (and probably others, including Envy; after all, I need a way for them to get back).
