I understand the impatience, especially since my reading speed/comprehension took a nose dive after the encephalitis. It's why I vastly prefer audio books these days. I load one up and take a walk and the act of walking mitigates the boredom/short attention span. This technique works especially well with my Spanish lessons.
Yeah, I do that also. When I walk to work, I've loaded some book to listen to onto my MP3 player. I'm currently listening to Galton' book on human intelligence from the Gateway to the Great Books anthology. But I want to keep my reading ability up - if I just stop and listen to all the books I "read" my actual reading ability will go to trash.
