While i totally disagree with how the animals are kept, (in tiny cramped unsanitary cages) I do not think that the eating of dogs and cats should be banned in China. I love dogs, I've owned a dog, but still...I don't see why it should be banned. If someone doesn't agree with it, don't eat it.

I've eaten my fair share of things that some people might find a bit repulsing, like pigeon, duck (some people think that's really weird), rabbit (those are commonly kept pets), and horse. As well as parts like tongue, sweatbreads, blood, lung, and brain.

And like some of the comments on that video, for example cows are sacred India, and a hindu person would never dream of eating one. Yet cow meat is everywhere in our culture.

Just because we don't agree with it doesn't mean we have to push our ideas of what's wrong and right to eat on other people.

Oh, and as a side note, I'm really glad you responded. People get offended way too easily, and I'm always game for an intelligent and respectful conversation with anyone...no matter the topic or opinion.

Hehe, you're worried about attacking me, but you and I are actually agreeing--note that I didn't say "let's ban dog meat, donate to PETA today" anywhere up there. The whole point of the post is, if we think of animals as food, then there's no reason that dogs and cats should be sacred any more than chickens, pigs, and cows. In fact, I think it's really awkward that the speaker in the video equated "not eating dogs" with "the progress of civilization".

Personally, I like animals very much, I have the moral dilemma of whether I can love some and eat others, and I have the luxury of being able to survive without eating meat. So I do, and I don't judge other people for making different choices as long as you don't waste.

By the way, I don't find anything on that list repulsing, and actually think it's wasteful in American society not to eat the whole animal. I don't mind someone killing an animal for food, but FFS eat all of it! So, rock on. (Just don't bring up the horse thing around Ari too loudly. I don't know how well that'd go over

I'm always interested in knowing why a person chooses to become a vegetarian. I think you have really good reasons. I also remember that you said as long as you are 95% vegetarian, you can "cheat" 5% of the time. :) This would not be acceptable if you were a vegetarian for religious reasons. But for you it's a personal choice, so there's nothing wrong with eating a little meat on occasion. I like how you're flexible, especially at group meals after critter gigs ( ... )

Thanks for your thoughtful comment!

Yes. It's hard to quantify it as 95%, but it's easy to say and the reality is somewhere around there. You personally usually see me in situations where I have to be more flexible, but during the week, I eat almost zero meat-and only find myself eating a few ounces once or twice a month. It's really easy, actually, outside of group situations.

The most annoying thing for me isn't finding something good to eat, but instead it's the feeling that I'm being held to someone else's standard for how I should be. People like to put things in boxes, and I get lots of comments and weird looks when I don't fit the "strict vegetarian" box. It's frustrating to be judged like that.

Honestly, the healthiest thing is probably to eat a little bit of lean meat or fish every day, because that's what our bodies seem to be designed for; my recommendation is to keep those books, and keep using them-you don't need to call yourself vegetarian to eat like one a few days a week. :)
