I remember one afternoon when the wind hand kicked up to 30 mph. We had gone grocery shopping, and there was an irrigation canal that ran in front of the store, inhabited by swallows. They would fly, as a flock, to one end of the canal, fighting the wind...and then roll on wingtip and turn to the side to catch the wind, get thrown to the other end of the canal in a matter of seconds...and then fight their way back to the other end.

Fifty to sixty mile-per-hour winds?! Wow. I bet hatpins and other assorted fasteners became very popular while that was going on. While I've never seen the sideways bird phenomenon, I do remember one year when our local Harvest Fest reported very high winds. Almost everything had to be weighted down, and I saw one small, thin woman out "walking" her large dog. It seemed more like she was using him as an anchor without him noticing.
