If people from various parts of your life consistently tell you that they're disappointed in you or what you've done (or not done, as the case may be), is it more likely that you've spread yourself too thin, or that you really just don't have the skills you thought you did when you took on the various projects/family ( Read more... )

There's another possible explanation, which is that the people in your life are an ungrateful lot who don't appreciate what you do for them, or don't realise how thinly you are spreading yourself in your efforts to please them.

You could try pleasing yourself a bit more, and if they complain, say 'Sorry, but I do need some time to myself, so back off until I'm ready.'

Personally I'm a selfish git, and when I do actually put myself out for other people, they are usually effusively grateful, not to mention surprised. Mind, I'm divorced, probably due to my attitude as just described. All I can say is that I'm perfectly happy being divorced.

I'm sure there's a moral in all this somewhere! At least, I don't see you need to assume that everything is always your fault...you are doing your best!
