You know, I'm sitting here, watching Camelot and trying to write a post about just what it is that's missing for Camelot to be (have been) a great show, but then I realized what the true problem ACTUALLY is: no fic
( Read more... )
THIS IS VERY TRUE. Like, I get that technically Merlin is extremely goofy, but it also has like the best fandom ever, and so much good fic, and somehow the fandom at large has developed such deftness for taking the little hints and flickers of greatness that the show provides and turning them into this amazing stuff, that I can't watch an episode and NOT read all this emotional profundity into it. Emotional profundity and gay subtext, ALL OVER.
And then I see Camelot and I'm like ehhh!
I stopped watching pretty early on, because it felt a lot like homework (pretty homework, but homework nonetheless!), but MAN, Merlin/Morgan was awesome. When will an Arthurian retelling go canon-'n-makeouts with those two, damn it!

EXACTLY. And this is true of many fandoms! There are a lot of shows (and books) that I think of as being a lot richer than they actually are, because of fandom. God, fans are awesome. I LOVE YOU FANDOM.
And even though Merlin is obviously a lot more fun (and occasionally great, usually when involving either Arthur or Morgana back in the day), the overall plot of Camelot is so cool, and would make such awesome ground for fic, and it makes me sad there is none. That I know of. This version of Merlin is fascinating, and everyone else... could be? They're almost there!
Plus, everyone is so pretty. Except Arthur. But Gawain is Private Ross from the Sontaran episodes of Doctor Who, and he is so pretty, he more than makes up for it
( ... )
Oh, Camelot went canon with Merlin/Morgana! In a fucked-up way. Morgana was clearly interested, and then she took Igraine's form for plot-related reasons and since she was there and all she went ahead and seduced Merlin. Then taunted him about it. It was awesome.
Generally, what happens is the people who watched the series while it was actually airing hang out together for a while, and then just after Yuletide, it breaks wide with all those people who ignored us while we were geeking about it while it actually aired. Generally, this only happens if two of the lads are slashable. And since EVERYONE in this cast is RIDICULOUS PRETTEH and ahs chemistry with everyone else, i think probably this is inevitable.
(Okay, so that was my experience with Merlin pretty much EXACTLY.)
Yes, indeed, there should be ALL OF THE FIC. And I'm not just saying this because the Eva Green version of Morgan owns my soul.
I remember before it started, hearing people talk about it like it was going to be the next big fandom thing, and then it just wasn't. I think maybe fandom is already saturated with Arthurian legend stuff because Merlin is such a big fandom.
She was hardcore. And pretty. But that goes without saying.
Yeah, there was a lot of anticipation for it! And then the next big thing... kept on being Sherlock? Doctor Who came back at around the same time? The show took a while to get going, and people lost interest? I guess we will never know. Maybe if it comes back for a second season things could change, though I hear Jamie Campbell-Bower has been cast in a movie recently. You could be right about fandom just having enough Arthurian legend already, but I wasn't a fan of s3 of Merlin and stopped watching it, and it was my impression that a lot of people had too. I guess not.
I didn't make it through S3 of Merlin either, which I think was part of the reason I enjoyed Camelot so much (I'll happily accept a bit of humourlessness in exchange for versions of Merlin and Morgan that don't make me want to bite people) I got the impression that a lot of people didn't care for S3 but because the fandom's so heavily into AUs a lot of people ditched the show but kept up with the fandom. I couldn't because of the aforementioned bitey feelings.
Yeah, that's part of the trouble of having some big names in your cast, I mean I can't imagine that Joseph Fiennes or Eva Green are short of other offers.
This version of Merlin is wonderful. It took me a while, but by the end, he was extremely fascinating to me. Merlin's version of Merlin brings up some bitey feelings of my own these days.
Well, I can tell you why I won't write fanfiction: I watched the first three episodes to give it a chance, then stopped. Not least because other than Morgan and Merlin, I found everyone either dislikeable or dull or both. Especially Arthur. Which was a problem. I don't watch shows where I can't stand the majority of the people. Meanwhile, I still love everyone over at Merlin and enjoyed season 3 a lot, so...
To each their own and all that. I eventually grew to like Arthur, personally, but I can certainly understand not caring for him. If you're already happy with the Arthur you've got, then, by all means.
I AGREE WITH THIS. I also have a smidgen of Merlin/Morgan fic I wrote early on in the season that could possibly be finished at some point, also so requesting for Yuletide, yes.
