The former is almost certainly what I saw. That dude was big and bold and loud.

The latter doesn't look like what I saw. I'll pay better attention next time to what the waterbirds look like. I knew it wasn't a heron or stork, or at least suspected as much, since it wasn't big enough.

Maybe your wader bird was a little egret?

Smaller than most storks/herons/egrets, white bird with black bill, black legs, yellow feet:
