IS THERE ANYONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT LINUX, APACHE WEBSERVERS RUNNING ON LINUX, DNS SERVERS USING BIND, OR ANYTHING BECAUSE I NEED HELP AND IM GOING INSANE.
Hey sorry I hadn't responded to your comment. Ive still got it in my inbox as I was planning on responding. Anyway, I've probably forgotten most anything I knew but I'll help how I can. Whats the trouble you're having?
I guess my first problem is just getting around cox's port block or whatever it is they do. I asked my networking teacher and he told me how to do it, I just forgot and trying to talk to him outside of class is just impossible.
Also I'm running gnome kde as my desktop, i'm not sure which is what because this is in regards to just adding a shortcut to an application, in my case firefox, to the main menu, but it doesn't let me do it even as root because I don't have the priviledges and I wanted to know the file directory of the applications and how to add shortcuts to it.
I know I have a lot more questions, those are just the two most recent.
1) As far as plain ol' web servers go, Cox blocks port 80 and possibly 8000 and 8080. To get around that you just use a different port. If you are using your IP address to get to the site then you'd tack on a port number thats not blocked: 192.168.1.2:8465. Then you tell Apache to listen on that port, and it looks like the command for that is literally 'Listen 8465'. Then so long as that port is unblocked/forwarded on your router you should be able to get to it. If you've got yourself a domain name then there are slightly more complicated ways that will make it so your dont have to specify a port number when connecting.
2) I don't know. I've only ever really messed with the command line. Once I got the interface working I didn't have anything to work for and lost interest.
