009. Coffee; 1038 words

Stopping to catch his breath, hands on his knees, Eunhyuk tries to calculate how many more blocks he has left to run. His wristwatch blares uncooperatively, mockingly parading his tardiness. Donghae was going to kill him this time, this being the umpteenth time he was late for work. Eunhyuk could almost hear his lectures, his threats to fire him ringing against her ears. And he almost thinks it funny that Donghae never could bring himself to do just that before he bounds down the street once again.

By the time he reaches the work building, one of his coworkers had already taken over her shift. The same coworker informs him of the angry man waiting for him in his office. Biting his lip, Eunhyuk nearly runs out the door when a sudden chill falls over him. Suck it up, take it like the manly man you are. He catches his breath, holds his head as high as it could go without looking foolish…and takes ten minutes to get to his office. His wristwatch just blinks as if sighing.

Donghae's back is facing him as he walks in. When Eunhyuk calls out his name, he slowly rotates in his chair as if he was in some mobster film, left hand tucked under his chin. He doesn’t even have to look at him to see the rage in his eyes, he can feel it burning his skin. Hesitantly, he settles his body into one of the chairs.

He opens his mouth and even before he can say anything, Eunhyuk winces. This was it, he was going to fire him and then he wouldn’t be able to pay rent. The landlady would kick him out and he would become a hobo with missing teeth and-

“Let’s go out for coffee this Friday.” ….the hell?

His wristwatch lets out something that sounds like a strangled yelp and a cough. Oh, wait that was him.

---

Friday comes slowly but surely and he doesn’t even remember if he agreed or not. All he does remember is the secretary asking Donghae to come inform a partner of his stocks, then sitting there for quite a while. It wasn’t like it was normal for him to go around dating his boss, besides there’s some rule against that right?

The rest of the week had been awkward. Donghae only came to work once or twice to give him the location of the coffee shop and to see how the company was fairing. Both times he would leave before Eunhyuk could say anything to him. He left him frustrated one too many times.

---

So it’s about 11:30, thirty minutes earlier than he had said to be there. Eunhyuk's feeling just a tad foolish, rotating his glass of iced water between his hands. Just a tad.

The waiters eye him carefully when 15 minutes slick by and he’s on his tenth cup of water, hands numb to the point it might as well be sawed off. He’s feeling sort of reckless when a waitress sneers at him, his full bladder starting to really bother him.

Mad. That’s how he feels when his wristwatch tells him it’s 12:15 and the seat across from him is still empty. And sad. That’s how he knows he shouldn’t feel. It wasn’t like he had wanted to come in the first place.

The time continues to blindly fly pass, but he stays. He can’t help but wonder if this is how Donghae felt when he was late to work. Somewhere in that thought he hopes he feels sad, the way he did now, at all the times he’s not there.

Donghae came, looking breathless and awfully like he had rolled around a dozen times with a few dozen girls. Eunhyuk thinks he should be a little bit more angry when Donghae plops himself into the metal chair and smiles nervously at 12:45, but he honestly can’t help grinning idiotically in return.

Eunhyuk prays he doesn’t notice the empty glasses the waiters had given up on taking away around his 37th cup.

Donghae does however. Mentions it and runs his shaking hands through his nest like hair when he recieves a jagged stare.

It’s nearing 1:27, the waiters are probably tired of seeing his face and the waitresses are probably tired from ogling the man he’s dating. They had both ordered black coffee after Donghae apologized, an offered explanation following suit. Something about missing the bus, getting on the wrong bus, and riding said bus to a rural part with no bus back. An unbelievable mess, yet Eunhyuk chose to believe him.

They both add one long river of cream and three packets of sugar into their coffee. Both raise a questioning brow and both answer it's better when you do it on your own. They both laugh till it’s too hard to breath and it’s not even that funny but they like each other’s laugh. That’s what is important when everyone else gives them disturbed glances.

---

Eunhyuk likes him he concludes as his hand is clasped in Donghae's, walking to his home. With his house only a few doors down, Eunhyuk slows his pace, squeezes his hand tighter, and Donghae understands.

He's not sure how to make time go slower until he cases a glimpse at Eunhyuk's slightly flushed cheeks and slightly chapped lips.

Eunhyuk is reaching for his keys and the next thing he knows his keys are on the floor with a loud clank. He barely has time to care when Donghae's lips are suddenly on his. Time seems to stop, but his heart seems to start beating for the first time because at the rate it’s going, he must have been dead before.

Donghae is reaching for his sanity and the next thing he knows he’s off his rocker with a soothing sigh. He decides very much that this is the best way to lose his sanity when he tastes coffee and the unique taste of Eunhyuk once he pulls away from the dry kiss and licks his lips.

And Eunhyuk's grabbing him roughly by the collar smashing their lips together knocking teeth, the moment his tongue is back in his mouth. Coffee and blood never tasted so good.

Donghae is really glad that the rule about interoffice relationships meant nothing to him.

Eunhyuk is really glad he took a chance and broke a rule besides the one on punctuality.
