I don't know what color you should go, but I dye my hair a darker brown in the winter (to cover a few stray greys) and then let it go lighter naturally in the summer and it's working for me.
I'd suggest that you try the Natural Instincts stuff that washes out over the course of a month and just have fun with it until you find something you like.

There's something about late Feb/early March that brings this on; I've been vaguely contemplating going red temporarily again, too. *g* Maybe our eyes are color-starved. Or it's been so long since we had actual sun streaks in our hair that we can't quite believe we'll ever get them again...

I have a lot of grey in mine (when it's not L'Oreal Cinnamon or whatever), and I always thought it would be a big deal, but it never really was. I color it about once a year or so, just because I want a change for a while. I use the level 2 stuff, which washes out in about a month, because I know me, and I know I won't re-dye it in a timely fashion, and I don't want to deal with the roots growing in ....
