You can hear Elena's self-reflective nature, which is part of her that sometimes fics overlook.
I'm glad it came across! I was definitely going for that. The thing is, often in fics, this kind of reflection just feels strange- who does that in real life- but Elena spent years writing down her life, thinking about her life, examining everything. She thinks about her life in a 'meta' sense.

She almost feels wrong in her grief, because it isn’t as strong as Sarah’s mother, who passes out, or Aimee’s brother, who starts yelling in the middle of service at nothing or noone.

and she squeezes Damon a little harder, not for him, but for herself.
She does, of course she does. Elena of all people understands losing those you care about.
Her reaction is more about Stefan, and Damon, than the woman herself, which, when she’s laying in her bed, she feels quite bad about, gives herself a minute to feel terrible. She doesn’t let herself go there, though, really go into Andie’s head, because if she does, she might breakD: (also, excellent and accurate ( ... )

But thank you- the job of this fic was to make you sad, I suppose. D:
I started out by making a list of all the deaths Elena was vaguely associated with, and I was nearly tearing up by the end, because it just. kept. going.
Grief and pain and loss have become so familiar, they're almost comical now, it doesn't hurt less, but what is her life.
Ok, now it's your turn to break me. *sobs*

what do you have left-
-if you lose everyone what do you have left-
She has herself, what a cruel joke
and then the "don't say his name" part JESUS
like all of the sections are great. I really love how you go through all the characters, even the minor ones, and how they're all resonate and painful in their own ways, like, how comforting Damon makes her feel useful, or feeling bad for Aimee and Sarah's parents. You're great at making all the sections distinct and unique, because they could have easily all blended into each other but they all stand out.
and this part: She doesn’t let herself go there, though, really go into Andie’s head, because if she does, she might break, and she can’t let herself feel every death- at this point that’s suicide. She feels bad for thinking this way, and sheds tears.
actual perfect omg. IT'S SELFISH TO TRY TO PROTECT HERSELF FROM FEELING EVERY DEATH /o\
She rather thinks she’s found herself, if only because losing seems to define ( ... )

It just breaks my heart, because she can't ~not empathize, it's what she does, and yet can't you imagine what it was like, feeling like she had to feel everybody's pain and.....aslkdp;fhqelpfjkq.
