what TV should I be watching??

I need advice from you all! I'm looking for a good TV series or two that I can watch on DVD-- preferably one with multiple seasons I can get from the public library or rent. I don't have cable, so I know I've entirely missed a lot of high-quality shows ( Read more... )

This is going to sound like an oddball suggestion, but I highly recommend Babylon 5. I usually detest space/sci-fi type shows, but this one has really strong characters and a great story arc that doesn't really have that much to do with 'space dilemmas' (my blanket term for Star Trek, etc.). There are five seasons of it out there (it's long since finished its TV run), but it's only the first four that are worth watching - they initially said they were cancelling it after season 4, so the writers wrapped everything up really nicely, and then the powers that be decided there should be a fifth season after all... and there wasn't much left to tell.

And, one of its stars is Mira Furlan... aka Danielle from Lost. :D

Yay for Dom-connections! I noticed her name right away when I looked up the show in the library catalog, and it made me press the 'request' button that much faster. :D

I've been watching "House" on DVD and I love it. It's in its 3rd. season on TV and the first two seasons are on DVD.

If you like things a bit more spooky/creepy I'd recommend "American Gothic" and/or "Invasion". AG was on in the late 1980's and "Invasion" was from last season (it was on right after "Lost"). Both revolve around mysterious doings in small Southern towns and were both created by Shaun Cassidy. Each show only lasted one season, but they both have devoted followings.

House is in it's 3rd season already??!! That's a great idea! I think Mr. woodnymph would really get into that show, too! (And how can I resist the sentimental Shaun Cassidy-factor of those other shows? Heee! *contemplates re-watching Brideshead Revisited while I'm at it*)

I suggest CSI (The original, not Miami or NY) but it's a little gory if you're squeamish. However, Greg & Nick more than make up for it. I love them so much. *draws little hearts around them*

Failing that, Gilmore Girls is also good. Very fast-paced, but hilarious. I'm especially fond of Michel.

Prison Break! ♥!! I love that show too much for words. I can't wait for the new ep next week!

Hmmm, I'm not squeamish but I've mostly avoided CSI because it has too much in common with some of the work I was doing for the past several years. What is Gilmore Girls about?

(*excitedly tries to figure out if prison break is on tonight*)

I know, I hate sports too. I think it's stupid that people seem to think that sports are all amazing and wtf ever.

I can't download it for AGES. Our download limit has decided to creep up to 8 gig out of 10, and I've got 2 weeks to go. *cries*

Depends on what kind you like. There's all the different Trecs, I like DS9 the best. Buffy is good. For Comedy they have Home Improvement out. ;)
I guess I'd suggest thinking about the ones you loved in the past, they are bound to be on DVD now.

My current shows not on you list are Veronica Mars, House M.D., My Name is Earl and Doctor Who. You should definately check out Arrested Development.

I hear the David Tennent and Peter O'Toole version of Casanova may be available on Region 1 DVD now.

Can you tell me anything about Veronica Mars or Arrested Development to sell me on them??

I've never watched any Doctor Who, and that must be remedied! I just looked it up on Amazon to try to figure out where to start and I'm horribly confused. Did the show have multiple runs?

I was gonna recommend Veronica Mars, but someone beat me to it! It's an amazing show about a girl who's best friend is murdered. Her dad was the sheriff, but after the way he handled the case there was a special election to get him ousted. He know has a private investigating company and Veronica works for him. She does most of the stuff around town because he's always busy on out of town jobs. She's also trying to solve her best friends murder. It's really good.

Ooh, this sounds a little bit like Twin Peaks, which I adore. Thanks for the suggestion!
