For the last few months since he became a Death Eater, Sirius and Regulus only met in stark, cold hotel rooms. It always ended up with their clothes crumpled on the floor and entangled in dark and stiff sheets. The two laid on the bed just staring up at the ceiling. This was usual, but something about all this was different. Regulus couldn't place what or why, but he knew somehow, someway it was his fault.

“Please for me,” His soft voice pleaded as it always did after they finished. “I told you, I'm not joining,” Sirius answered in the same no-questions tone as it always took when asked. This time, however, Regulus changed his focus from the unfamiliar ceiling to Sirius. His jaw was set straight with painful determination. “But I'm there. You said you wanted to take care of me,” Regulus spoke his mind instead of keeping his thoughts silent.

Sirius head whipped to the side with eyes burning. “Don't make me choose between you and my friends,” he barked. “But-” Regulus started to speak but was interrupted. “You're going to get yourself killed and now you want me to die with you?” He shrunk down, “I..no.” He felt his brother's body moving over his. Dark hair covered most of Sirius' face, but even if it hadn't Regulus would not have been able to read his expression. “I'm sorry.” Regulus looked up sharply. Sirius never apologized. Even when there was undeniable proof laid before him, he never apologized.

Regulus' world start to spun along with the room. He found the strength to ask, “Why?” Sirius hovered over him a moment longer, staring at every inch of him. It dawned on Regulus what he was doing. Sirius was memorizing him like this was the last time he would ever see him. “I'm sorry,” Sirius said again. Regulus reached out his hand to grab Sirius as he pushed himself off of him but just missed barely. He felt something or rather some word lodged in his throat wishing desperately to get out but unable to. Sirius padded his way across the hardwood floors making large stomping noises. All Regulus could do was watch him get dress. Every button closed was a second that ticked by to the end. A door knob turned and not even a single glance was tossed to him. The ending came with a loud slam of the door.

There was no sniffling, loud sobbing, or wails that could be heard standing in the hallway. Even now with his heart's broken shards scattered around him, Regulus would not let himself become a burden to his brother. His empty eyes stared at the door. Even now, his lips could not produce the word sorry.
