Something had pulled her out of her deep sleep and strange dream. Evelyn laid there, eyes closed as she slowly woke up, her mind running over details of her dream before it turned to figure out what had woken her. The house was quiet, the birds chirped their hellos to the sun outside, and somewhere in the distance she could hear a table saw going. Nothing, though that would have woken her. She opened her hazel eyes and suddenly discovered her waker. She was staring right into a pair of identical hazel eyes and she smiled.
“Good morning Jake.” She whispered softly and Jake smiled brightly to see his mother was awake. Jacob was sitting on her bed and leaning over her just waiting patiently for her to wake up.
“You promised that we’d go fishing today and then go to Sweet and Ice afterward.” Jake reminded her and she stretched with a large smile.
“Did I?” She asked and Jacob gave her a look that clearly stated that she did and she had better make good on it. She quickly snatched him up in her arms and started kissing him all over his neck and face while he giggled and wiggled in her arms. She finally freed him, flopping back onto her pillows with a satisfied sigh and looked over at the clock.
“Get up!’ Jake exclaimed pushing her towards the edge of the bed.
“I can’t. Gravity is too strong. Holding me down.” Evelyn said in her best anguished voice and Jake grunted as he continued to push her inch by inch towards the edge.
“MOM!” he complained pausing for a moment to look at her and see her flash a smile at him. She slowly rolled to her side putting her right on the edge of the bed and Jake smiled as he gave her one final push and she landed on the floor with a thud. Jacob scurried to the side of the bed and looked down at her as Jasmine walked up and began to lick her face.
“Alright, alright. Jasmine enough! I’m awake.” Evelyn said laughing softly as she pushed herself off the floor and stood. “Just let me take a quick shower and we can go.” She picked Jacob off the bed and swung him around her room a couple of times before putting him on his feet. “You can go and make sure everything is ready to go while I’m in the shower okay love?” She asked and Jacob beamed at her before running out the door towards the kitchen. Evelyn yawned as she pulled a fresh towel out of the linen closet in her attached bathroom and rolled her eyes as a Hot Wheel fell to the floor at her feet.
Evelyn parked the Jeep Wrangler in the shade of a large evergreen tree and climbed out. Jasmine jumped down behind her and quickly walked around the Jeep to Jacob’s side and waited as he climbed out and shut the door. Evelyn took a deep breath of the air and smiled, looking around at the beautiful warm day as she opened the back of the Jeep pulling out two fishing poles, the tackle box, a large cooler filled with drinks and snacks and a couple of comfortable folding chairs.
Evelyn wasn’t much of a fisher, although she had been on many fishing trips throughout her childhood. Eric, her younger brother, was better at fishing than she was. She still loved going though, mainly for the relaxation only Mother Nature could provide. She let Jacob carry the tackle box as they made their way down the trail that would take them to the shore of Lake Foxfield, Jasmine leading the way like an expert tour guide. When they finally decided on a place that looked good for fishing, although Evelyn thought it didn’t look much different than any other spot around the lake, they set up the chairs and Evelyn went to work getting both their poles ready to cast into the water. Jacob watched her with fascinated eyes as she attached a weight and lure to the end of his line then threaded some fish bate onto the hook. She then stood up from her chair and pulled the pole back and casted the line into the water like an expert. She handed the pole over to Jake who took it from her with a huge smile as she sat down and repeated the process with her own pole.
After both lines were in the water, Evelyn sat back, kicked off her sandals and closed her eyes behind her sunglasses and relaxed as Jacob watched his pole as Eric had taught him while he played in the rock and sand at his feet, Jasmine laying between them.
She was daydreaming about Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow when something smacked her wetly in the face. She jumped, slightly startled and took off her sunglasses to look over then gasped.
“Look momma!” Jacob said slightly out of breath but grinning from ear to ear. In his arms was probably the biggest fish Evelyn had ever seen come out of the lake. He was hugging it tightly as it wiggled in his arms, but it still slipped from his grasp and landed on Evelyn’s bare stomach, flopping around making her squeal loudly as she laughed. Evelyn tried to make a grab for it, but it flopped itself off and onto the ground, where it continued to flop wildly. Evelyn jumped up and with Jake and Jasmine tried to catch the slippery flopping fish.
Derrick was whistling softly to himself when he heard the squeal followed by laughter then soon barking. When he stepped out of the bush he stopped and smiled at the scene directly in front of him. Evelyn and Jacob were on their hands and knees with Jasmine circling them and barking. At first he wondered what they were doing but then he saw the silver glint of a fish flopping around on the ground as they obviously tried to keep a good hold on it, but repeatedly failing to do so. He chuckled to himself at the scene as he watched for a couple of more minutes. Evelyn suddenly threw herself to the ground pinning the fish under her chest, its head thrashing against her throat.
“Grab it by the lower jaw.” Derrick called out as he started forward. Evelyn looked over at him and then down at the fish.
“But there’s teeth in there!” Evelyn said as if she expected something else to be in a fish’s mouth. Derrick shook his head and knelt down beside her and grabbed the fish by the lower jaw, pulling it out from under Evelyn. It still wiggled a bit as it hung off his forefinger when he held it up making Jacob giggle. Evelyn picked herself up from the ground and stood in front of him catching her breath. Derrick looked at her and hid a grin. She had donned herself in a pair of blue jean cutoffs that showed off her dancer legs quite nicely and a bikini top that covered her breasts nicely while still teasing the viewer of the goods it hid. Both were now covered in sand and slime from the fish, but Evelyn didn’t seem to notice or care much.
“This is one hell of a fish.” Derrick remarked pulling his eyes off Evelyn and to the fish.
“I caught it!” Jacob exclaimed excitedly and Derrick raised an eyebrow and looked at Evelyn who nodded.
“Brought the bloody thing all by him self too apparently.” Evelyn said smiling down at Jake.
“Apparently?” Derrick asked and Evelyn shrugged.
“I didn’t exactly watch him do it.” She admitted and Derrick chuckled.
“What on earth where you doing then?” He asked and Evelyn crossed her arms under her breasts pushing them up a bit.
“If you must know, I was daydreaming about Johnny Depp.” She told him and they stared at each other for a moment before he smiled.
“Want me to stick it in the cooler?” Derrick asked pointing at the fish. Evelyn gave him a confused look.
“Why?” She asked and Derrick blinked.
“So you can take it home and cook it.” Both Evelyn and Jacob blinked at Derrick then said “Ewww” in the same tone of voice.
“That would mean having to cut it open and clean its guts out.” Evelyn said looking thoroughly disgusted and Derrick just stared at her. “What?” She asked after a moment.
“You can remove an animal’s testicals or uterus without blinking or thinking twice about it, but you get all squiggly when someone even suggests cleaning a fish?” Evelyn shrugged with a small pout hooking her thumbs into the pockets of her shorts.
“Meh.” She uttered softly, which he learned long ago simply meant ‘It’s how life is.’ in Evelyn language. “Besides,” She continued turning to point at the cooler. “That’s for drinks and snacks, not freshly caught fish.” She looked back at Derrick who rolled his eyes and walked over to his own cooler and tossed the fish inside.
“If you’re not catching them to eat later, why are you out here fishing?” He turned and asked and Evelyn smiled.
“Just for the sport of fishing.” She said and he looked over at her forgotten pole and nodded.
“Yeah, I can see you’re really into it. Sure it’s not so you can daydream about certain pirates?” He asked her almost teasingly and Evelyn beamed at him and walked over to her chair and sat down.
“Well, there’s that too.” She said settling back into the chair. Jacob grabbed Derrick’s hand and smiled up at him.
“Come.” Jake said pulling on his hand towards his mother.
“I do believe Jake would love it if you joined us Derrick.” Evelyn said hiding a smile behind her hand as her sparkling hazel eyes looked at the two.
“How could I say no to such an invitation?” He said. Why would I want to? His mind offered.
A couple of hours later, Derrick sat on a rock watching Evelyn and Jacob play in a nearby water hole and keeping an eye on the poles. After catching a couple more fish, Jake had gotten tired of the waiting that was done between the excitement of bringing a fish in and Evelyn had finally noticed the sand and now dried slime of Jake’s first catch of the day and had opted to wash it off. Jake, seeing his mother splashing in the water, quickly abandoned his pole to join in on the fun. It had escalated into a full all out water war where not even Derrick was safe. The two, tiring of getting each other wet after they were already soaked to the bone had turned on him with innocent smiles and mischief in their eyes. They had managed to soak his entire right side; jeans, t-shirt, hair, even the sock on his right foot wasn’t spared. He had sat there as they soaked him not responding or moving out of range and when the two had stopped he just gave them a smile that made Evelyn bite her lower lip as she smiled uncertainly at him.
When another fish caught a line a few moments later, Jacob ran to Derrick’s side in excitement and Evelyn pulled herself out of the water and joined the two, grabbing a towel to dry herself off. She slid into her chair and watched the two with a smile, her thoughts on the smile Derrick had given her and Jacob earlier, the type of smile that she had learned usually spelled trouble. She had no doubt in her mind that Derrick would thank her later for the soaking in his own way, the problem she was having was in what way would the thank you come?
It was the same smile he had given her earlier that year when a food fight had somehow broken out during the town’s annual picnic and Derrick had managed to stay out of it, that was until Evelyn had walked up to him covered in various picnic foods and insisted he try a piece Madame Sandy’s pumpkin pie then slapped said piece of pie onto his lower jaw and neck, letting some of it drop under his flannel shirt. She had done a good job on making sure the pie was spread across his neck and part of his chest before she gave him a smile stepping back to admire her handy work, he had given her the smile then. Later that day just shortly after she had changed into a fresh set of clothes and without warning, he had picked her up, carrying her easily to the fountain that stood in the middle of the park where the picnic was held and dropped her in it.. When she surfaced he had smiled down at her and simply said “You looked like you needed a drink.” And then he walked off leaving Evelyn sitting in the cold water looking shocked.
Evelyn sighed to herself at the memory and looked over to where Derrick and Jacob were now kneeling on the ground as Derrick carefully took the hook out of the fish’s mouth while Jacob watched his every move. She rested her chin on the palm of her hand quietly watching them with a soft smile. Derrick was so good with Jacob, so patient and willing to explain what he was doing so that Jacob could understand every word and action to the fullest. Evelyn shook her head at herself and almost laughed.
“You alright over there?” Derrick asked her and she smiled at him with a nod.
“Just clearing my head.” She answered and glanced at the sky. “It’s getting late.” She commented softly before standing. “If we’re going to go to Sweet and Ice Jake, we should probably be leaving.” She informed her son who pouted for a moment and looked like he was about to start bargaining. “Derrick, you’re more than welcome to join us. My treat of course, for helping with that first slippery fish.” She quickly added, which headed off any bargaining arguments her young son had planned. Jacob smiled brightly at Derrick and patted his knee.
“Mark says they have that new flavor in now.” Jacob told him excitedly and Derrick couldn’t help but smile.
“Then I guess we’d had better start packing things up here.” Derrick said and Jacob jumped up and ran around gathering things up. Evelyn shook her head softly with a chuckle as she watched her son.
Still working on this one.....:)
