v-en is adding secondary past tense to the verb. basically past tense = he took pat in past = he has taken
so wants fed, = want is the infinitive, the -s is present, and the fed is -en , past, so it's like, past in the present. it is just that usually the want and need are not in that clausal position.
it's easier to understand if one day you let me draw out some verbal groups. there is nothing i like more.

I only intuitively understand the +V-en bit. Does it mean using the past tense of a verb?
