It would make life so much easier if humans were Star Trekkishly psychically empathic, wouldn't it? I don't want actual telepathy, of course -- clearly that would be a nightmare. Just a nice little extra awareness of general emotional state, kind of like a "Detect Intent" spell.

... on second thought, maybe not.

It's cool in some cases, but overall is not all it's cracked up to be. Especially when you pick up on things that other people are trying to keep hidden. Like someone who is annoyed that their spouse did something idiotic and you think they're made at you. Or someone who is sad and getting over a situation, and you want to help because you know they're sad, but they don't want to be reminded because they're trying to get over a situation.

Knowing human beings, I'm quite sure we'd find a way of complicating things even more than they already are. :P
