When she found Colin looking to another girl, she followed his gaze and catalogued the type of glance. None of them were what she'd consider longing or romantic. Some were, in fact, downright hostile. Her thoughts flashed back to one in particular, the threatening glare he'd given Millicent Bulstrode yesterday and she wondered just why he'd been so angry with her. Parvati couldn't think of anything that Bulstrode could possibly have done to upset Colin to that level. Bulstrode was rude and aggressive, after all, she'd threatened Parvati just for stopping in the middle of the hallway just two days ago and it wasn't like it was Parvati's fault that she simply had to tell Lavender about the most recent glances Colin had given someone.
It didn't come as a surprise when Bulstrode showed up at breakfast this morning with purple spots all over face, not with that glare that Colin had given her. Parvati knew Colin better than she knew herself and she could tell that whatever it was that Bulstrode had done was going to result in some sort of retribution.
The surprise came that night when Parvati called out, "Colin, wait!" and he turned around. As the rest of their classmates finished making their way into Gryffindor, Parvati pulled Colin behind a tapestry hiding a small alcove.
"What did Bulstrode do to deserve the spots?" Her whisper was urgent but low, it wouldn't do for anyone to overhear the conversation, she didn't want Colin to get into trouble.
"Why do you think I did it?" Colin cocked an eyebrow and crossed his arms over his chest.
"I could tell from your glare yesterday."
"Just because I glare at someone…" Parvati didn't let Colin finish.
"I know your glares, Colin. There's the glare that says 'I hate you' and then there's the glare that says 'you'll pay for that'. You gave her a 'you'll pay for that' glare and I wanted to know what she did to deserve it." Parvati crossed her own arms and cocked an eyebrow, mimicking Colin's expression and posture.
"You watch me that much?" He sounded amazed and she could see a small smile trying to form and she couldn't understand why Colin would be happy that she knew that he'd hexed Bulstrode.
"Of course I do, we're friends!" She also didn't understand why Colin couldn't quite grasp that they were friends.
"No, we're not, Parvati. I don't want to be your friend." The smile disappeared and he sounded hurt. She didn't want that and the idea that he didn't want to be her friend when they'd spent so many hours talking over books and her grades in Charms and Transfigurations had never been better even though he was a year behind her and wasn't doing the same level of spells.
"Why don't you?" Her voice was small as she started thinking of ways to salvage the conversation or flee. She didn't much care which option.
"Because of this," he reached out a hand, touching her cheek before skimming it along her face, threading his fingers past her ear and into her hair. As she realised he was touching her, his lips were already claiming her own, touching and asking for permission. They were overly dry and chapped but the thoughts of gloss disappeared in the wake of feeling Colin's other hand on her waist, tugging her closer, pulling her in so that they lined up chest to chest.
Her hands shook as she raised her own arms, twining them around his neck and teasing the back of his neck with her fingertips.
