When the owls arrive, Seamus ignores them. He ignores the second wave as well. Third wave is smaller and the fourth, smaller yet. By the time a year passes, the owls trickle to one or two every once in awhile. They're easier to ignore.
He's put back together enough that he can survive. If he sees his mates, he'll break again, just like Humpty Dumpty, so he ignores them or sends them a quick negative response. By the time eighteen months go past, he doesn't even have to do either. Since they're on different floors, he doesn't even worry about seeing Harry, Ron, or any of their, his former coworkers.
He can't take the looks anyway. That's what really makes him want to break again. He doesn't like the looks, the way that pity intermingles with an intrusive curiosity and a sense of dark relief. Thank God it isn't me. It's obvious to Seamus so he'd rather be here, in the Department of Magical Games, where he can pretend that his new coworkers don't know what happened or who he is.
Sure, there's MacMillan but he doesn't count considering that he never really knew Dean and Seamus were together together. He might've known they were partners but … but he doesn't get that odd mix in his eye so Seamus can deal with him, can see him daily and not want to break down again. MacMillan doesn't notice the hollowness in his smile or in his eyes. MacMillian's a perfect workmate.
It's been nineteen months (nineteen months, one week, four days, six hours and forty-one minutes) since he'd lost Dean. The pain's going to go away soon. That's what the books say, the ones that Hermione had owled him eighteen months ago and that he just got around to reading in a fit of desperation to do anything to keep this gnawing grief from eating him whole.
He has to believe that the pain's going away because it's the only thing keeping him sane.
As always, I'd love to hear what you thought.
