It was easier to train in the morning, before people were awake and he wouldn't get shit for being asleep in the middle of the day. He missed Chopper watching, but he really needed to be able to practice without fear of wounding the small reindeer if and when he got overly excited.
He held his katanas - one in each hand, the other situated in his mouth firmly - and waited, breathing in the sea air and feeling the vibrations of the ship beneath his feet. His body tensed, sensing something wasn't right when-
"Psst. Zoro."
He opened his mouth, before he could help it, the metal of the katana following steadily to the ground cutting into his skin. Cursing, he picked it up, sheathing the other two.
"How come you're up so early?" asked Luffy, a confused look on his face as his head retracted from its place by Zoro's ear to where he was currently standing.
"Training," grunted Zoro, staring at the sword. He glanced over at Luffy. "What are you doing up?"
Luffy shrugged. "Hungry." His stomach grumbled on cue.
"Go bug Sanji for food," suggested Zoro. Shit, it was going to rust if he didn't clean it soon.
"I tried," said Luffy, pointing cheerfully to the bruise at his temple. It looked new and vaguely shoe-like.
Zoro laughed. "Idiot."
"Haaa?" asked Luffy, one finger in his nose.
Shrugging his head, Zoro grinned. He looked at his sword; contemplating for several seconds before opening his mouth, tongue swiping easily along the blade to clean the thin line of blood along both sides. The acid taste spread through his mouth and he swallowed.
When he turned back to look at Luffy, it was to find shocked, wide eyes staring at him in a way that made his mouth go dry. "...What?" he asked somewhat defensively. His own eyes started to widen as Luffy approached, grabbing his sword and then staring at his hand. Several moments passed where Zoro had no idea what was going on - except that the thin fingers on his wrist and the thumb rubbing carefully along his wound together welled a sense of expectation in his chest.
Luffy, for his part, seemed to be concentrating hard as the blood from Zoro's hand dripped along his fingers, onto the deck. His eyes focused just below Zoro's and he leaned his body upward, tongue skating just beneath his bottom lip to lick deliberately. When he pulled back, Zoro could see the brief flash of blood on his tongue before he closed his mouth and swallowed.
His eyes darkened, one hand shooting out to fist Luffy's dark red shirt. "What was that?" he hissed, trying his best to ignore the awkwardness in his limbs; the tightness growing in his stomach.
"I wanted to make sure your wound wasn't-"
"Not that," interrupted Zoro. "Why did you...lick...me."
"Oh! You had blood there. I wanted to see what it tasted like," said Luffy matter-of-factly.
"...Don't you know-" -how weird that is? Zoro finished in his head.
Luffy's blank expression was enough of an answer to his unasked question.
"Nevermind," he said, cheeks going a distinct shade of pink.
"Zoro?" asked Luffy, confused.
"Go back to sleep," he grunted.
Ignoring him, Luffy bounded towards the front of the Going Merry, plopping himself happily atop the small head and breathing in contentedly. Zoro watched for a few, brief seconds before sighing. "Idiot," he muttered, not sure if the comment would be better directed at Luffy or himself. Thoughts about how warm and soft Luffy's tongue had been flooded his formerly-inactive imagination and he cursed, realising one of his three swords was now wedged into the floor beneath him. The blood from his wound dripped down his fingers as he tugged it free; he watched the slowly-drying trails of red, a thought occurring to him.
He grinned. It's only fair, right?
"Luffy." His eyes darkened. "You want to try one of my swords?"
"Really?!"
"Just make sure to cut yourself."
Luffy grabbed the sword excitedly. "...Don't you mean, 'just make sure not to cut yourself?'" he asked.
Zoro smirked. "I know what I said."
