What are you doing to the poor asparagus? Try this...
get a double boiler with a steam basket (or a metal collander), or fill a cookpot 1/3rd full of water add 2 or 3 lemon or lime slices to the water, squeezed first. Heat the water to a rolling boil, and turn down the heat. Place the Asaparagus stalk down (not head down) in the water (or in the basket if you have one) and cover. let it steam for no more than 10 minutes, and then take one stalk out quickly, recovering the rest while you test for done-ness. Unless they are mighty thick, they should be done enough in 10-15 minutes. and the citrus makes them YUMMMY!
