Chapter 9:

Tatsuya let out a tired sigh, rubbing his head as he looked over at the toddler lying in his crib and looking up at Tatsuya with deceivingly innocent eyes. Tatsuya gave a tired smile.

“Kazu-chan, please go to sleep,” he said, resisting the urge to just let Kazuya stay awake and to go back to his room where he could curl up under the covers and get the sleep he really needed.

“Why?”

At the word, Tatsuya winced; he was really starting to detest that word. Very much.

Kazuya was currently going through his ‘why’ stage; he asked the question endlessly, no matter if he really wanted to know the answer or not, and seemed to find enjoyment in seeing what answers the adults around him could come up with; unfortunately, Kazuya had also figured out that the more he asked the question, the longer he would be able to stay with a certain adult. Thus, he had also decided that ‘why’ was a perfectly good answer to everything.

“Because Tat-Tat is tired,” Tatsuya responded, stifling a yawn.

“Why?”

“Because you’re awake,” Tatsuya sighed.

“Why?”

“Because for some reason, you’re not asleep,” Tatsuya was close to whining, but he would never admit it.

“Why?”

Tatsuya didn’t even bother to answer; he leaned his head against the rails of the crib, and sighed heavily, “Kazu-chan, please, will you go to sleep?”

“Why?”

Tatsuya groaned.

*    *    *

“Why?”

Yamapi blinked down at Kazuya, and stared at the exhausted Tatsuya and Junno; being called at eight in the morning because Kazuya was unable to sleep and Tatsuya and Junno simply couldn’t stay awake any longer had been unexpected but he had rushed right over, giving responsibility of the not-even-awake Jin to Ryo as he left the house.

“You’ve been causing trouble, haven’t you?” Yamapi scolded fondly.

“Why?” Kazuya asked. He was clutching his stuffed animal, and looking up at Yamapi.

Yamapi sighed; in the fifteen minutes that he had been here, that was all Kazuya had said; Yamapi thought after going through Jin’s terrible two’s stage, he would be able to somehow convince Kazuya not to be so stubborn, but clearly, he overestimated himself.

Kazuya raised his arms suddenly, indicating that he wanted to be lifted. For a moment, Yamapi debated telling the toddler that he only got lifted up if he stopped asking why, but then one look at Kazuya’s eyes made him melt and give in.

Lifting Kazuya out of his crib, he got a grin out of the toddler.

“Why won’t you sleep? You’ve made Tat-Tat all tired,” Yamapi scolded as he walked in circles in Kazuya’s room as he spoke.

“Why?” Kazuya asked, a bit grumpily now.

Yamapi raised an eyebrow, and then watched as Kazuya slowly began chewing on the ear of his stuffed animal; he blinked.

“Kazu-chan…”

Kazuya looked up at him with a ‘what do you want?’ expression that he had no doubt learned from Tatsuya.

“You’re getting sleepy~” Yamapi announced in a sing-song voice; he knew that when Kazuya tried to bite things that he was just trying his hardest to stay awake.

Kazuya shot him a dirty look - well, the best he could anyways, considering he was a baby and extremely cute, too cute to really give a good glare.

“Why?” he finally said, with a stubborn look on his face.

Yamapi sighed, “You’re chewing your toy; just give in already, Kazu-chan.”

“Why?”

“Because Pi-Pi wants you to sleep.”

“Why?”

“Because little boys like you need all the sleep they can get.” He snuck a look at Kazuya for a moment, before adding, “Jin’s still sleeping right now.” It was probably a dirty trick, mentioning Jin, but maybe…

Kazuya had paused for a moment, hearing Jin’s name, but then he crossed his arms, “Why?” he asked almost accusingly.

“Because he knows sleep is good for him,” Yamapi paused; well, not really. Jin just liked to sleep, but didn’t all children? Except Kazuya apparently.

“Why?”

“Because everyone needs sleep,” Yamapi continued.

“Why?”

Yamapi closed his eyes with a groan.

“Why?”

“I didn’t even say anything that time!” Yamapi protested.

“Why?”

“Because…because…”

“Whyyyy?”

Yamapi groaned, and shifting Kazuya to one arm, he fished his hand phone out of his pocket, and dialled a number.

“You’d better have a good reason for calling me at eight thirty in the morning,” Ryo’s voice snapped crankily over the line.

“Ryo-chan~”

“If all you called for was so you could do that, I’m telling Jin that you’re actually the tooth fairy, and take away all the fun you’ll have when he starts losing his baby teeth and you get to sneak things under his pillow.”

Yamapi gasped, “That’s low,” he muttered.

“What do you want?”

“Can you look something up on the internet for me~?” Yamapi wheedled.

There was a sigh and Yamapi heard the sound of Ryo getting off the bed and padding out of their bedroom to the study where the computer was.

“Yeah, what?” Ryo snarled.

Yamapi thought about how to phrase this in a way that wouldn’t have Ryo yell at him, “Type in ‘how to hypnotize babies?’” he said as innocently as he could.

In his arms, Kazuya emitted a whiny, “Why?”.

*    *    *

Ryo stared at the toddler; Kazuya stared back.

“Wh -”

Kazuya blinked when the nozzle of a bottle was stuffed into his mouth; he blinked slowly, looking between Ryo and the bottle of milk that had just been given to him.

He eyed Ryo in a cutely suspicious manner before deciding to go with the milk.

Ryo smirked.

“Pi-Pi went home,” he repeated for Kazuya again, “Because you drove him crazy.”

Kazuya didn’t say anything, and just kept drinking his milk.

“Also, because he’s not a certified hypnotist, and I don’t want to know what will happen if he managed to hypnotize you into thinking you were a kitten or something,” Ryo continued.

Kazuya blinked, not knowing what hypnotist meant, but he just stared at Ryo. The adult in the room stared back; he eyed the level of the milk left in the bottle cautiously.

Kazuya pulled the bottle away from his mouth when he finished, and set it down on the tray of the high chair, “Why -”

“The sky.” Ryo responded without blinking, catching Kazuya off guard and making him blink as well. Then, with a wary expression at Ryo, he opened his mouth and -

“Wh -”

“Because.”

“Why?”

“Because.”

“Why?”

“Because.”

“Why?”

“Because.” Ryo said again, in a bored tone, as he countered every one of Kazuya’s ‘why’ questions. He lifted Kazuya out of the high chair, and held him in his arms. He could already tell when he had come over, thrusting a sleeping Jin into Yamapi’s arms in exchange for the still-awake Kazuya, that the toddler was getting crankier, and getting more and more exhausted. It was only a matter of time…

“Why?”

“Because.”

“W…why~?” Ryo smirked at the stifled yawn.

“Because.”

“Why?”

“Because.”

“Wh…why?”

“Because.”

“Wh -”

…before that happened. Ryo smirked as Kazuya’s head slumped against his chest, having falling asleep mid-question. With how exhausted Kazuya must have been, staying up late and all that, as well as the warm milk Ryo had just fed him, he knew that it would only be a matter of time before the toddler couldn’t resist it any longer and fell asleep.

“Ha, who needs a hypnotist when you have me?” Ryo asked in a triumphantly soft voice, “I’m totally the best.”

Kazuya gave an undecipherable whine in his sleep, as if asking ‘why?’ even while asleep, but other than that, merely slept on, completely exhausted.

*    *    *

“Kazu-chan! Morning~” Jin yelled as soon as Yamapi had let him come over. He had thrown a bowl of cereal at the wall, screamed at the top of his lungs and even refused to watch television before his grandfather had let him.

“Why?” Kazuya responded immediately.

Jin blinked in confusion, “’cause it’s not afternoon yet.”

“Why?”

“’cause it’s still morning.”

“Why?”

“’cause Pi-Pi says so.”

“Why?”

“’cause Pi-Pi’s a grownup.”

“Why?”

“’cause he’s old.”

“Why?”

“’cause he was born ages ago!”

Next to Ryo, Yamapi looked highly affronted.

“I’m not old!” he protested.

Ryo smirked.

“I’m not! You’re older than I am!” Yamapi protested.

“That just means I aged better,” Ryo said in a superior voice.

“No way!” Yamapi argued, “I’m not old!”

Meanwhile, Jin was still answering Kazuya’s questions without missing a beat.

“’cause the sky is blue.”

“Why?”

“’cause it’s not raining.”

“Why?”

“’cause the sun is out.”

“Why?”

“’cause it’s daytime.”

Tatsuya, who had come in halfway during the conversation, blinked and stared with Jin.

“What’s with you?” Ryo asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Such…patience,” Tatsuya’s eyes were wide, “How…”

“Well, I guess he doesn’t take completely after the idiot after all,” Ryo remarked, jabbing a thumb in Yamapi’s direction.

Yamapi glared, “I’m not an idiot! And I’m not old!”

“You wanted to hypnotize him!” Ryo retorted, as if that sealed the argument. And truthfully, it probably did.

Tatsuya shook his head in bewilderment as Jin continued to answer Kazuya’s questions.

“Why?”

“’cause bunnies have big ears.”

“Why?”

This conversation went on for a while, much to Tatsuya's amazement. He watched as Kazuya toddled after Jin into the kitchen, and Jin was totally unperturbed by the questions.

"Why?"

Tatsuya shook his head, completely bewildered, watching as Jin climbed up onto a chair and grabbed a cookie from the box on the kitchen counter, broke it in half and handed one half to Kazuya.

"Why?"

---- END CHAPTER ---

What? I really wanted to do a chapter featuring the 'why' stage children seem to have XDDD not all children, but lol, a lot of them go through a stage where they ask endless questions about stuff, soooo ^___^
