Wrighting Things

The fall wind was blowing the brown and brittle leaves across the cemetery path as Phoenix wrapped his coat tighter around himself, pressing the bouquet of flowers he was holding to his chest. He was busy glancing wearily at the sky as he approached Mia's grave, hoping that he'd make it before the imminent downpour of rain started. He almost missed the man who was already standing before the grave. For a split second, Phoenix saw a flash of red roses on the ground before he ground to a halt, just inches next to the white-haired figure blocking the path. Phoenix reeled back a little and gaped.

"Godot?" he asked a little uncertainly, though, really, he was sure. Seven years older, yes, more lines added to the tanned face and more scruff to the side of it than was really necessary, but then, Phoenix couldn't really talk when it came to that.

The man turned and graced Phoenix with a small smirk. And yep, the visor, that smirk; definitely Godot.

"Wright," Godot greeted with a nod.

"How?" Phoenix began, and then realised that wasn't how he wanted to start this.

However, Godot simply shook his head and chuckled.

"I've spent a lot of time asking myself exactly that," he answered the unfinished question. "And "Armando" will do."

"So... you're out?" Phoenix asked, still a little dumbfounded. He wasn't sure how he felt about that. Godot, no "Armando", out of prison and especially here at Mia's grave.

Godot nodded. "Yeah. Good behaviour," Godot mimed quotation marks with his fingers, "and ill health." He laughed derisively.

"That's all?" Phoenix asked, not buying it. That alone didn't grant you three years less.

Godot looked at Phoenix and Phoenix hated that he couldn't read the man, though he thought there might be a raised eyebrow somewhere behind that visor. Which didn't really matter, because seconds later that arrogant smirk was back, wider than before.

"Ah, you've learned, I see," Godot murmured, still loud enough for Phoenix to hear. The former prosecutor held up a hand before Phoenix could even begin to voice what exactly he thought of that statement.

"No, of course that's not all," Godot then began to explain. "Let's just say I helped some very powerful people solve some very important cases that were causing them a lot of trouble."

Phoenix gave Godot a look that conveyed exactly how dubious he found that answer, but he supposed that it might somehow explain why the other man was out of prison. What it didn't explain...

"And now..." Phoenix wasn't at all comfortable bringing up the subject of Mia with Godot... or Armando, or whoever the man was these days. "You're saying "hi" to Mia?"

Above, the sky darkened further and small droplets of rain began to fall.

Godot's smirk fell instantly and, to Phoenix' surprise, was replaced by something that was almost a smile, even as sad as it looked.

"Yeah. And keeping a promise I made a long time ago..."

Now it was Phoenix' turn to raise an eyebrow, but this time not out of suspicion, but out of surprise at how soft Godot's voice had grown. Phoenix had to admit, he hadn't thought the other man capable of such tones.

"What's that, then?" Phoenix couldn't stop himself asking. He wasn't expecting an answer.

He got one, nonetheless.

"Seven years ago," Godot began, "I swore upon this grave that someday I'd make things right." He paused. "I promised her."

There wasn't really much Phoenix could say to that, so he shut up. He was getting better at that, he found.

"So, Wright." It was then that Phoenix realised Godot was using his proper name. "I was wondering if you could use some help in that agency of yours."

Again, Phoenix was reduced to gobsmacked staring. Was Godot, Armando, asking him for a job?

"I realise I'll never defend or prosecute again," Godot elaborated, obviously interpreting Phoenix' silence as doubt and, incredibly, sounding rather regretful about it. "I never expected to. Thankfully, I have other qualities. I do make a good investigator."

Phoenix considered that for a moment. It was true. Whenever Phoenix had seen Godot investigate, the man had been alone, fast and efficient. Phoenix had always had Maya and he supposed Miles and Franziska von Karma were somehow sharing Gumshoe between them.

"You want to work for me?" Phoenix asked, his mind still not on terms with that notion.

Godot nodded gravely: "I'll do what it takes."
