The prompt was "invention".
01. Thursday
“Chinchilla doughnut.” Ailsa says in all seriousness, handing Katie a bar of chocolate...or at least what she assumed was chocolate.
“Eh?” She asks, sceptically eyeing the candy.
Her friend rolls her eyes dramatically at her, “Chinchilla meaning ‘four’ and doughnut meaning ‘you’, thus chinchilla doughnut.” She explains, waving the chocolate in front of Katie again.
It has to be a Thursday, Katie thinks, Thursdays always were a little odd.
“So, you’ve...invented a language involving chinchillas and doughnuts?” She asks quizzically, cautiously taking the chocolate from Ailsa.
“Polka-dot pineapple.” She replies.
“And that means what exactly...?”
“No idea. Just thought it sounded good.”
“Huh. Definitely a Thursday.”
02. Afterwards
It all happened so suddenly, but they should have seen the signs a mile off. One day, they could; they next, they could not. Some people had been having trouble anyway - when there’s little left, you can charge what you like - but there was truly nothing now.
People didn’t want to change. Of course not - they hadn’t changed before, they certainly wouldn’t change after. They needed all their toys.
Some people accepted that change was happening, and helped shield those who wouldn’t. They made things, so life appeared how it was before, keeping the greedy playing with all their toys.
03. Destroying Beauty - Fandom: Heroes
There's a beauty in it, Sylar realised long ago. A beauty and a complexity and a simplicity, all wrapped up in one organic package. He's in awe of the design - so he destroys it.
And it feels good, so much better than piecing together his petty little watches. A grand design that took millennia to develop, wiped out with a few perfected moves by him: he is special. He truly is.
He flicks his tongue over his bottom lip as his finger traces a line in the air. In front of him, the line appears as a defined cut over Peter Petrelli's forehead: he thanks a god he doesn't believe in when he hears the stifled yell from Mohinder, forced to watch.
As the first drop of blood trickles from the cut, Sylar smirks. He can't wait to see how Peter's brain works.
04. Cloudbusting (inspired by Kate Bush's song and video of the same name)
The man rose, carefully stretching his limbs, sighing with satisfaction despite his fatigue. The hours had been long but he had delivered the final touches to his machine. He had dreamt it in his college days, long before marriage, fatherhood, respectability... Somehow, the dream had never died. Through the years he had engineered, assembled, revised, tested... The frustrations had been many but this time it would work.
Behind him the door squeaked as a dark head peeked into his office. “Daddy, the Dream Machine is ready?” his daughter asked. It was too late for the child to be up, but he was not a harsh man and Kate was no ordinary child so he smiled.
Dream Machine was indeed a fitting name for an apparatus meant to destroy Gloom and bring Light. Reaching out a hand to caress her unruly curls, he softly replied, “Yes, sweets. Tomorrow we run it.”
05. Dreamer of the Day
This we know: there was once a boy who collected pottery and dreamed of the Crusades. When war came, he left his pottery and took up arms: dynamite for a sword and a ghutra as a helmet. He wrote his own story and it ended in a flash of glory- a motorcycle spinning off a road, and then quiet.
What can I tell you about this man? He was born in Wales and raised among the dreaming spires of Oxford. He was reborn in Mesopotamia and rose up in Arabia. He's famous for the things he that he did and very famous for things that he didn't do; he's half real, and half-invented, a billow of white silk flickering larger than life in the mind's eye.
Lawrence of Arabia was born on a quiet country lane; raised in newspaper columns and film reels; and he is immortal now.
