"Sad 'fugee face!" skyape_radio September 20 2007, 14:51:33 UTC
Rad movie. I was dodging bullets in the theater.
And yes, very much a "war movie" with subtle sci-fi undertones. There need to be more flicks that are ABOUT something that just happen to take place in the near-future without lots of "Hey! Lookit my spaceship!" going on.

without lots of "Hey! Lookit my spaceship!" going on.

... not that there's anything wrong with that.

CHILDREN OF MEN is throwback to what Science Fiction movies used to be back in the 60's and 70's. When you said "Science Fiction Movie" back then it meant a totally different thing from what it meant later on.

Arnold Schwartzenegger did a lot to change the perception of the Science Fiction Movie what with THE TERMINATOR, THE RUNNING MAN and PREDATOR which resulted in an entire generation growing up thinking that Science Fiction Movies meant ACTION! BIG GUNS! BLOWING UP SHIT!!!

Good point.

I'm not sure we can lay all the blame on Arnie, though. Stuff like Star Wars and Outland were coming out way before he strapped on the Gargoyles.

The only part I didn't like (which was also wholly realistic) was the inability to really get attached to any of the characters for long. You got glimpses into who they were and BAM! they were gone.

I actually liked that part of it because it made things so damn tense. If somebody got taken out of the story somehow, there wasn't a big swell of music and a closeup on one of the other characters so they could do their "Oh, shit!" face. It was very much like you were sitting there watching this stuff happen.

So, as a fan of the Alpaca Lips and a card-carrying misanthrope, I would be guaranteed a good time when I watch this movie?
