On Reading

"The best moments in reading are when you come across something; a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things--that you'd thought special, particular to you. And here it is...set down by someone else, a person you've never met. Maybe even someone long dead. And it's as if a hand has come out and taken yours."

holy crap, molly. my FAVORITE by far quote in that play. how did you know? in my copy of the script, it's circled, underlined, and i think the page is folded down. i remember when he said it when we saw it it hit me like a slap in the face because it nailed how i felt to a t. so when i bought the script, i went and found the exact wording. i've used it as advice, too. it's funny. sometimes when watching a movie, a play or reading a book, there are lines that stand out to me, things that connect so very strongly it's hard to explain. and it's totally different for each person. so my connection with this line, and my obvious love and affection for it, may not make sense to anyone else. but it does to me. anyway, i'll put my shock away and say, yes, i agree hector. thank you for sharing. :)

I think the best part about that quote is how it is what it describes. That connection with writing is something I think many people experience, but it always FEELS personal. And I feel like that quote (especially with powerful delivery) captures that poignancy beautifully.

The funny part is that I don't remember the quote from seeing the play or writing my paper about it. But I'm sure I must have noted it. I kind of wonder if there isn't another identical entry in my lj from three years (has it really been that long?) back.
