AH. The random Merlin/SGA fusion story I'm (slowly) writing KEEPS DOING THE SAME THING. And I also generally dislike present tense stuff, so I have no idea why the story keeps writing itself that way.
I honestly think some things just sound better in present tense; probably because most people DON'T use it. It has it's place, just not in THIS story, damnit. ::grrrrr::
I'm told (or at least I used to be told) that it was bad of me to include both past and present tenses in different parts of a story. I tend to have the same problem, though.
As embarrassed as I am to have written artsy crap, I sometimes think the people of the world (and we) need to put out artsy crap at some point. Otherwise it ends up polluting everything I do.
Well I do like a couple of the stories that I've written in present tense. I just wish that, upon making the decision to write in a specific manner, that my brain would let me maintain some consistency with that decision.
I have the same problem with first person. I got 3 chapters into writing a first-person novel a few years ago and I just couldn't go through with it. Every time I went back to check my personal pronouns I decided my writing sucked and started over.
Oh man, I wrote my novel in first person. It seemed like a great idea at the time, but by the end I wanted so badly to be able to write a scene WITHOUT my main character in it. Or to make an observation about something that she wouldn't necessarily be thinking about. Drove me crazy.
It could be worse you could be writing the whole thing in future tense?? (Having written this Charles will wonder whether that's actually worse, this will be closely followed by an all-together humorless attempt to write part of his comment in the future tense. After he fails miserably at this he will realize that really he has no grasp on tense at all, having been--previous to the beginning of this post--a dancer, and not a writer. Which someone will someday say, before being beaten into a bloody pulp, is nearly as bad as being a lover and not a fighter. Having lost all concept of where... no... WHEN he is, Charles quietly imploded. Luckily for him that happens only really far in the future after he dies of old age.)
Haha nicely done. The best part is that there IS actually a brief part of this story that is written in future tense, but I hadn't really thought about it until just now.
