There's another world beyond them inhabited by copies of ourselves. They serve the Queen of Hearts who rules over this place.

The mirrors repair themselves when broken. 'Tis easier to cover them, but leaving them as they are means the other side can watch you.

Break it, or at least cover it. They repair themselves quickly, so 'tis more effective just to make it so they can't watch you with them. Unless you'd rather have someone watching your every move.
