CHARACTER NAME: Genjyo Sanzo
SERIES: Saiyuki
JOB IN TRIOU: singer in a band
BACKGROUND AND PERSONALITY:
Genjyo Sanzo had an odd childhood. His parents abandoned him when he was still a baby, leaving him at a former hippie commune turned church known as "The Church of the Holy Sunflower". Their "religion" was an odd mix of Christianity, Buddhism, and Paganism. The man in charge was named Koumyou Sanzo, but everyone called him the Reverend. He was the one that found the child, and he received permission to be a foster father to the baby. He eventually adopted the boy. The Reverend was a bit of a hippie who loved classic rock and was suspected of toking up before services.
One night, the Reverend was working in the church's homeless shelter when some gang members came in looking for money. When the Reverend refused to give them anything and offered them shelter instead, they attacked and killed him. The teenaged Genjyo saw it all happen. He testified against the attackers in court, which resulted in a few death threats from angry gang members. As a result, Sanzo left the commune at 16 and moved to faraway Triou. He convinced the state that he was old enough to live on his own and became an emancipated minor. The Reverend had left him a little bit of money, so he had enough to live on, but he wasn't rich.
After graduating from high-school, he received a full scholarship to Triou University. He majored in Religious Studies, for no good reason other than he wasn't sure what he wanted to do with his life.
One night during his senior year, after drinking a little too much at a bar with some of his classmates, he agreed to sing karaoke. To everyone's surprise, he was pretty good. To his own surprise, he actually enjoyed it. After his "performance", he was approached by a guy with an offer to join his band. Sanzo agreed just for the hell of it. (It was either that or get a job after graduation. Really. The blackmail had nothing to do with it.) He swears he hates the band's growing fame, but he secretly enjoys the music because it reminds him of the Reverend.
Sanzo's default mood is "grumpy". He has a nasty temper and usually doesn't like to be around people. In Sanzo's mind, the only person he can count on is himself.
He can be polite if he wants to, but usually he considers politeness to be a waste of time, and he doesn't have a lot of patience. His idea of a motivational speech is a metaphorical kick in the ass. (Sometimes a literal one too.) He keeps his distance from others, and is reluctant to admit that he cares about his friends, or even admit that they are his friends.
On the other hand, Sanzo has a strong sense of justice, and he will often defend those who are unable to defend themselves. (Of course he'll probably complain about having to do it.) He's usually very serious, but he does have a sense of humor, it's just well-hidden. He's not completely heartless, but he'd like people to think he is.
FIRST PERSON SAMPLE:
Fuck this shit. Whose idea was this anyway? I mean, this is a fucking country bar. We don't do country and western. We don't even know any country songs.
Damn, we really need a new manager.
Alright, fine. We'll just stick with classic rock, maybe play "Freebird" a couple times, and hope they don't throw bottles at us, because I am not putting up with that shit again. I don't care what our idiot manager says, I'm not going to stand there and let some punk hit me with a beer bottle. He's just lucky I didn't shoot him.
No, the punk was lucky, not our manager. Don't tempt me. Last month he booked us into a goth club. Do we look like goths? And I don't even want to discuss that mall opening. That kind of shit is for has-beens, or teenyboppers, not us.
I guess we have to rework the set list. We can throw in a lot of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Eagles, Allman Brothers, that kind of stuff.
We better be getting well paid for this gig.
ANYTHING ELSE? He has a registered .38 firearm, and a concealed carry permit, just in case the gangs ever catch up with him, or something.
