Peter hated Christmas.
Remus, at twelve, had endured a full moon on Christmas Day. Sirius had to face going home to a coldly indifferent father and a mother whose cruelty was labeled “necessary discipline.” By comparison, he had nothing to complain of.
Still, he hated Christmas. He hated returning to a mother who regarded magic as corrupting, and who eyed him as if he were an unexploded bomb. He hated his nieces and nephews for asking him what he was studying. He hated having to spend a “joyous” holiday lying.
Most of all, he hated having become a talented liar.
