If it's been dry recently, then it's probably been deemed Your Fault that an inadequate supply of worms had been turned up.

Robins are hugely territorial. I realize this isn't the nice explanation but what you probably got was 5 minutes of "oi, piss off, I know your dad" and then a few frustrated squawks when you didn't do as instructed.

Show a robin a mirror sometimes. You'll be surprised at the result.

I think I've figured it out. I was near the bird bath and I think it wanted me to go away so it could have a wash.
