It's easy. The characters and setting are devised, and it's the plot that the writer invents. It's a way to indulge in a fandom that is off the air/out of print, and to explore 'what if' scenarios.
It's also plentiful and free. Find a few good authors, and for some people, it's an entertaining diversion.
It can also, all too often, be nauseatingly abysmal. I've enjoyed fanfic for ten years. Don't read as much as I used to, but I've written a little and read a lot.
I did, but what the post was about was fanfiction.com, a sucking void of crap right smack in the middle of the internet. I mean come on, Harry Potter on the Millennium Falcon making out with Misty from Pokemon! It's just ridiculous.
Oh, man, guh. There is a reason that place is nicknamed The Pit, and that I never browse there. I leave that up to Ren and Rose, who have better stomachs than I do.
Haha, sometime you and I should grab a fanfiction from there and have at it all MST-like. That would be awesome.
