CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III
CANON: How to Train Your Dragon (movie)
CANON REFERENCE: Wikipedia page!
AGE: 15
GENDER Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL MS 3
ENROLLMENT Scholarship. He’s a smart kid.

APPEARANCE: Hiccup isn’t terribly small for a boy of his age, but compared with all the other kids in Berk he’s small and weak. He can barely lift most of the tools and weapons the other islanders use easily, and it’s clear that he’s one step behind all the other kids his age, who are already strong and athletic and growing into the builds of their ancestors. Hiccup has longish shaggy brown hair, green eyes, and is a skinny kid with hardly a muscle on his skeleton. He’s actually stronger than he looks simply by virtue of the fact that everything on Berk is made for big strong burly folks that are practically made of muscle, and just the simple fact that Hiccup can lift these items without getting squished means he’s got some muscle. Not tons, but it’s there, and he’ll probably get a shock when he first runs into, say, a shovel he can actually lift since it wasn’t made for crazy huge people.

PERSONALITY: Hiccup is very bright, and is very smart when it comes to technology and engineering. Unfortunately, the most experience he’s had with technology are the various bits and pieces he’s able to bring to the island, and his engineering skills are limited by what he can design and create himself at the forge which is basically his second home. Also unfortunately, his skills aren’t appreciated by the rest of the village, who don’t really care about engineering or modern technology, and since Hiccup’s failures seem to outweigh his successes, he’s basically grown up with insecurity and self-consciousness that highlights every mistake he makes.

All that doesn’t deter him from continuing on anyway. In fact, it only makes him more determined to prove himself to his father and everyone else on the island. Because even if he’s mostly different from the others, there is one thing that he has in common with them: His determination. Hiccup is driven to succeed, to prove that he is just as good as the other kids on his island, even if he can’t do it in exactly the same way. In fact, part of his stubbornness to succeed involves proving that his methods are just as good as the general “hit it and win” standpoint that is the center of Berk’s philosophy.

But behind all that stubbornness and determination is still a boy who thinks he can’t do anything right. So when things go wrong, and they usually do with disastrous results, he’s quick to blame and be upset with himself. Canonically, when things go very wrong, i.e. his best friend taken away, his father disowning him, his tribe turning their backs on him and all of them going off to their probable deaths despite Hiccup’s warnings, Hiccup went into a sort of shock. He stood still in one place for hours as they all sailed off and it was only Astrid’s pointed questioning that spurred him to action. AU Hiccup is the same way, though he hasn’t had quite the same experience. Yet. If and when such an event happens, he’ll react similarly.

However, Hiccup knows how to get down to business when it counts. When something is on the line, he’ll cast caution to the winds to save the people he cares about, even if it means risking his own life to do so. Of course, it’s unlikely he’ll run into such a situation at Reims Academy, but if he does, it’s extremely likely he’ll react that way.

COMPUTER APTITUDE: Moderate to skilled. Hiccup is very smart, and can figure out things like computers quickly, but he’s had little experience with them in the past, and hacking isn’t really in his interests anyway. So while over time he could potentially get good enough to get past filters, he probably won’t do it.

WEAKNESSES (OPTIONAL): Hiccup is small for his age, kind of a weakling, and crippled by insecurity and self-consciousness. The kid grew up in a place where everyone considered him a failure and a waste of space, so he’ll be constantly afraid that everyone new he meets will think the same.

AU HISTORY: Berk is a tiny island off the northern coast of Scotland which is pretty much ignored by the rest of the world due to its size and relative insignificance. The inhabitants of Berk have never been particularly troubled by this. The island has always been isolated from the rest of the world (except from its ruling nation of the United Kingdom, which tolerates its isolationism), and to be honest, that’s how they like it on Berk. An island steeped in tradition, the people of Berk have been doing things the same way for centuries. Originally settled by Norsemen, the people of Berk have kept up the ways of the Norse almost obsessively, eschewing technological advancements and keeping with what’s familiar, what they know works and has worked for generations.

Part of this grand tradition is the island’s feud with another nearby isolationistic island. Over the years the feud has morphed from a you-raid-us-we-raid-you-back situation into a sort of sports rivalry. Rugby, football, and various tournaments between the two islands are commonplace, and though the only prize is really bragging rights, the honor and glory from defeating their ultimate rivals is intense and extremely desirable. It’s what they live for.

Hiccup, however, was never the athletic type. Despite his father being not only the leader of the island (technically he’s a Lord and has the duties of a mayor but no one ever calls him Lord anything. He’s just Stoick) but also the greatest and most highly decorated athlete the island had seen in a couple generations, Hiccup somehow never received any of that skill, being far more interested in the books he could occasionally find, and the very rare pieces of technology he could sometimes get his hands on. To say that the islanders, and Hiccup’s father especially, distrusted technology would be an understatement. Hiccup would try to convince his dad that really, some small technological upgrades to the way they did things would make everything more efficient and easier, but it never helped that Hiccup’s own inexperience with the technology tended to cause more problems than they solved, further increasing Stoick’s distrust of technology in general.

As Hiccup got older, the differences between himself and the rest of the islanders only became more apparent. He was a disaster on any sport field, often single-handedly causing the team to lose from his mistakes. Any time he managed to bring in a new piece of technology to try to help, it would only backfire miserably, causing Hiccup to end up being ridiculed by the entire island, including his father. Hiccup was never good enough, because he was never like the other islanders, even though that was the only thing he ever wanted to be: like everyone else.

Finally, after a heated argument with his father following one of Hiccup’s particularly spectacular failures involving a washing machine, as well as briefly meeting one of the star members of the rival team and… finding that they were actually kind of friends, Hiccup realized that maybe staying on the island wasn’t such a good idea. He learned about Reims Academy after sending away for information on schools, and applied for a scholarship, which he received.

The whole island was, unfortunately, rather relieved to see him go.

SAMPLES
INTRANET/1ST PERSON SAMPLE So I got a letter from my Dad today, not that anyone really cares. I’m pretty sure he’s determined to completely ruin my life even from however many miles away.

He wants me to join a sports team. Seriously. Me. On a sports team. Says I need the practice. Guys, I’m not good at sports. Never have been. I don’t know why Dad’s convinced that me going off to school somehow magically means I’ll be good at sports or even interested in them, but it’s not the case. Anyone got any tips on how I can, I dunno, let him down gently or something? I can’t really go “sorry Dad, your son is a complete disappointment to you in everything he does.”

He already knows that.

LOG/3RD PERSON SAMPLE Hiccup stared at the washing machine, his old foe, with some trepidation. One of the more infamous examples of his near-constant failure back home had involved one of these dastardly machines, and he wasn’t keen on repeating the experience. Unfortunately, he wasn’t sure how he could avoid that. He was already feeling embarrassed about asking about nearly every piece of technology he ran into. Hiccup was fairly certain he was driving everyone nuts with his incessant questions.

He couldn’t help it, though. Almost everything was new to him, and he just had to know how it all worked. It was just so fascinating, all of this technology. If only he could bring his Dad here and show him and say hey look, guess what, technology isn’t actually evil after all! Who would’ve guessed! But Hiccup knew that was useless. Even if he somehow managed to get his father off of the island, the culture shock would probably be enough to render him semi-catatonic.

And besides, there was still this washing machine to deal with. Obviously the dials had something to do with it, but he didn’t know what any of these terms meant. What made one shirt more delicate than another, enough so that it had to have its own separate setting? What difference did the material make? Wasn’t it all made out of the same kind of fabric? And how much of this… detergent stuff was he supposed to put in, anyway?

Hiccup gritted his teeth and approached with caution. He was going to do this, even if it meant disaster. He was going to master the washing machine, even if it was the last thing he did.
