[[After trying to pin down more exact information from Russell, here's what I think as far as where they're from and what they know.]]
*dropkicks the OOC brackets aside*
They're 18 months from the end of series, still a bit yet before the movie. That'd connect Russell and Fletcher to
superman_dead and
light__of__day's time (for simplicity; there's so many timelines @_@)
They don't have a clue what happened to the brothers. They've heard of someone who looks and dresses like Ed running around, but no suit of armor with him, and they know it's not Ed, so the next logical assumption is that it's Al. But they've not run into him. And really, they had no actual connection to the rest of the characters beyond Ed and Al. It's likely things got crazy in Central, and I don't think they would've stayed at the church entrance.
So they don't have a clue what's gone on, and it's equally unlikely that they've been able to get anyone to tell them very much, if anything, and Al wouldn't remember them at all. Russell's assuming the Ed in his time is dead right now, although he's starting to question that. He knows Mustang was shot, that he resigned and went North, due to newspaper articles.
The hero of the Ishbal war, the Flame Alchemist, turning in his watch and resigning his commission and elisting and quitting alchemy? Oh yeah, that'd be a scoop for the newshounds. Far as he knows, the official story is that Roy was injured trying to save the Fuhrer's family from attackers and was shot, badly wounded in the process. That's the sum of it.
Russell reveals what he does know while talking to Ed to keep him from
getting plastered, particularly outside of the Nexus. XD;; I pity him. Russell was actually scared seeing Ed like that. He'd probably never admit it outside of being under duress, but he does respect and look up to Ed (figuratively speaking) as we see at the end of the series. Seeing an Ed - any Ed - looking so old and tired and defeated scared the hell out of him.
They're still in the dark about a lot. What do you think?
