When I bought this house, I knew from the bright green parallel lines of grass, and the feeling of walking on a bog in the yard, that the septic system was in dubious health.  The guy I bought it from seemed amazed to hear that a septic tank needs to be cared for; he assured me that it hadn't been pumped in the 20 years he'd owned the house and had ( Read more... )

There's a septic pumping business around here whose motto is, "We're number one in the number two business". It's good to take pride in your work.......

oh dear... I dislike septic systems but I really really hate what the county inspector's regulations in Ohio stuck me with, when I was building.
http://www.inspect-ny.com/septic/septalts.htm

It's some sort of big concrete tank with two chambers, and it has these stirring paddles and bleach filters in it. I mean, it's like having blenderized blackwater, and then they bleach it and it runs out into the yard?

I am into substainability. I was planning on going off-grid. I never used bleach because of dioxins and they stuck me with that? Legally...

Actually I had a composting toilet for about three years, there.
