Secrets Lily Kept, and One She Told

Jun 07, 2009 08:58

*waves* Hello! I've had this journal since 2005, but I rarely post on it. (I just don't have that much to say, lol.) However, today I'd like to share something rather special. I've been writing my own fanfiction for a while (privately), but I recently wrote a piece for the hp_fivethings festival. It's the first fic I've ever "published" online, and it's ( Read more... )

Posting fic isn't spamming and this one isn't too long. I love that each of the five things is a full story. Your piece needed to be long to do that.

You can really tell an engaging story and you know how to keep things moving. I like that. You create a full and sympathetic picture of Lily's and James's characters. Ones that are I think in line with canon.

(I liked the exchange between Lilly and the Knight Bus driver over her muggle parents. It felt real and in character.)

I love to have stories show up on my f-list. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you for your kind words! It means a lot to me, particularly since I know you're a great writer. I've been browsing your stories since I friended you. To Be A Customer is one of my absolute favorites, by the way. (I never thought I would like a story about a house-elf so much!)

I only worry about posting because people friend this journal assuming they're getting a lurker (and for the most part they are), but when I start posting, I worry that changes the nature of the relationship. I suppose that's kind of silly, but I REALLY don't want anyone to be angry with me. I'm very shy, but after several years of lurking, I think I'd like to dip my toes into active fandom. :)

(Also, the fretting about the length was more about the festival guidelines. They wanted pieces to be about 1,000 words... and my story was six times that. But I just couldn't cut it down any more!)

I think it would be unreasonable for anyone to begrudge you the right to post in your own journal. I for one was pleased to see a post from your journal even if you do call yourself a lurker, because I always like to find something new to read. I hate it when things don't show up on friends-list.

I like the longer pieces because they say something.

I'm glad you like my house-elf story. I hate reading Dobby in canon, but I loved writing this one. You are very kind yourself.

Ahh, I love this story, and how Lily comes full circle with James, and the idea that she often takes out that sweet valentine and looks at it. It's something I feel could've been overly sappy as done by other writers, but you've hit the emotional mark with this story. The characterisations are perfect - James is so wonderfully arrogant and charismatic. "like a king granting a favor" when asking for that kiss - and for "medical reasons" - snerk ( ... )

Ah, this is excellent! Good pacing, good characterization, felt very real to me. I enjoyed the bits with Snape, as well. Thanks for the great read!

Thank you! I had a lot of fun with the format of the 5 Things--it really kept the story moving and it let me edit and edit until the characterizations were just right. Really, Severus was such a huge part of Lily's life (and a huge part of her evolving relationship with James) that I simply had to include him--I'm glad the result worked for you!
