Powers, Skills, Pets and
Equipment

Powers:

Tonks is a rather skilled witch who knows both defensive
and offensive magic. She also knows several spells that
serve no other purpose except for that they amuse her. As
an Auror, she's been trained extensively to battle and go
against those who practice the Dark Arts which included
the ability to duel and think fast on her feet. Being
born a Metamorphmagus, didn't automatically land her a
position as an Auror, but it helped her. She got top
marks in her disguise courses.

  • Metamorphmagus -
Tonks can change her appearance to suit her
needs. She doesn't need a potion or spell, all
she needs is herself. There are limitations. Her
mass is still the same. She cannot imitate
voices. She's limited to just physical
characteristics such as hair, skin, and eye color.

Scorch Change - Before her arrival in
Anatole, Tonks could not change her voice or
impersonate a male in any meaningful way. After
her arrival in Anatole, this will change. She
will be able to change her voice and replicate
the functioning bits much to her chagrin. It will
also be easier for her to morph. She won't have
to scrunch up her nose so much.
  • Witch - Tonks is a
skilled witch. She is capable of casting a
corporeal Patronus which is in the shape of a
dragonfly. She was an Auror at a very young age
which speaks well of her abilities. She is
capable of casting both verbal and non-verbal
spells, a prime example would be during the
Battle in the Department of Mysteries when she
was able to stun Lucius Malfoy without saying a
word. She can brew potions. She can charm things.
Tonks can definitely hex a person seven ways till
    Sunday. Her specialty, however, is
    transfiguration.
  • Auror - Tonks has
been trained specifically in the apprehension of
witches and wizards who practice dark magic.
She's been in sticky situations before but has
managed to come out unscathed (most of the time).
Her dueling talents are good. The first two times
she dueled her aunt Bellatrix, she lived.
  • Flight - Tonks is a
good flier but requires a broom to do so.
  • Apparate - Tonks is
capable of Apparition which is the magical name
for teleportation. There are limits. Apparation
becomes more difficult when distances are
    increased.

Skills:

Despite her
appearance and attitude, Tonks is an intelligent woman.
She knows how to apply her knowledge in everyday
situations and some situations that you wouldn't normally
find yourself in.

  • Detective Work - As
an Auror, she's been trained to track down people
who practice the dark arts, the worst of the
criminals in the wizarding world. She has some
    investigative skills.

Pets:

N/A

Equipment:

She's going to have a few things on her.

  • Clothing - Black
fingerless gloves, a black jacket with snaps down
the front and an asymmetrical hem, a dark purple
hoodie, a charcoal colored t-shirt, black
trousers, black boots that are good for stomping,
socks and undergarments. It is pretty much this
    outfit

    with a few slight changes.
  • Wand - Mahogany,
    12.5", Unicorn Hair core
  • Pockets - Two of
the pockets of her jacket have small,
undetectable extension charms on them. They
contain: a package of Droobles bubblegum, Muggle
money, Wizarding money, a tube of grape
chapstick, a few other tidbits that aren't going
to matter to anyone but her. Also, lint.

Canon History: (A useful link is here.

Nymphadora Tonks was the only child of Andromeda
and Ted Tonks.

Her mother, Andromeda, was born into the Pureblood Black
family. The Blacks were both highly respected and more
often than not, they were also highly fanatical about
blood purity. Muggles, and those witches and wizards who
had married Muggles to produce Half-bloods, were beneath
them along with anyone who associated with Muggleborns.
Andromeda was the middle child out of three girls. Her
sisters had no problems supporting the family ideology.
She was sorted into Slytherin but she didn’t share
the same prejudices.

Her father, Ted Tonks, started life completely opposite
from Andromeda. He was a Muggleborn. He was also a laid
back Hufflepuff.

They first met during their Second Year in History of
Magic. Andromeda had been instructed by Professor Binns
to tutor a failing Ted. They got a long grudgingly at
first but Andromeda eventually found herself looking for
excuses to be around Ted. For the longest time, neither
one of them admitted their true feelings. She told her
fellow Slytherins that she was just trying to suck up to
the Professors and that’s why she kept tutoring him.
Ted told his friends that he was just trying to pass
though he’d rather be out on the pitch knocking a
few bludgers around. They shared their first kiss during
their Sixth Year.

Ted and Andromeda kept their feelings private until after
they left Hogwarts. With the exception of two, no one in
her family approved of the match. After marrying Ted in a
very quiet ceremony, Andromeda was disowned and her name
was blasted off of the Black Family Tree.

Nymphadora came along less than a year later.
Ted and Andromeda had an argument
not an hour after Nymphadora’s birth, specifically
they argued about her name. Ted did not like either one
of those names. Andromeda refused to budge on her
position despite also refusing to say how she came up
with Nymphadora Vulpecula. In the end, Andromeda’s
stubbornness won her the victory. Their daughter’s
name would be Nymphadora and that was that. Ted,
realizing that he had lost, decided that he would simply
call her Dora.

It was obvious within the first day of Dora’s birth
that she was different. Without the aid of magic or
potion, the color of her hair kept changing. One of the
Healers at St. Mungos recognized Nymphadora for what she
was, a Metamorphmagus. Metamorphmagi were extremely rare,
rarer than Animagi. When she grew older, she’d be
able to control it. Until then, her parents were told to
accept that her hair and possibly other features were
likely going to change often.

Her first foray into mobility revealed that she was a bit
klutzy. It was apparent within her first few days of
learning how to crawl and walk. Dora had the habit of
hitting her head more than most babies. She could trip
over anything. She could knock things over with ease.
Andromeda was forced put a cushioning charm on many of
the items in their house.

Growing up, she was close to her paternal grandparents.
She visited with them often but visits from her mother’s
side of the family were rarer still. Upon her marriage to
Ted, Andromeda had been disowned. To complicate matters,
Andromeda’s older sister Bellatrix Lestrange had
become a Death Eater.

Bellatrix was a follower of Lord Voldemort or
You-Know-Who. Voldemort planned a revolution against the
Ministry of Magic. He gained followers because he played
into their notions about blood superiority. What
followers he couldn’t gain through like-minded
thinking, he acquired through blackmail and the Imperius
Curse. It was a dark time for the world and at the height
of the First Wizarding War; the Tonks family had been
forced to go into hiding.

The family continued to remain in hiding until Bellatrix
and a large majority of her friends had been sentenced to
Azkaban Prison for their crimes.

Dora received her letter for
Hogwarts the summer after she turned eleven. The Sorting
Hat assigned her to Hufflepuff. She was smart. She could
have gone into Ravenclaw. Dora was also very brave and
would have made a fine Gryffindor. Slytherin wasn’t
an option, she wouldn’t be happy in that house.
Hufflepuff was the best choice for her and the sorting
Hat recognized that.

In her Fifth Year, Dora had to come to a few decisions
regarding her future. Despite the inability to behave,
she was a very good student. Tonks could have gone into
almost any field that she wanted but she only had one
profession in mind. Dora wanted to be an Auror. She
wanted to put away the bad guys. Her motivation was a
combination of personal feelings and desires. Tonks also
thought that it might be a little bit glamorous and
exciting.

Becoming an Auror required the best grades possible.
Nymphadora applied herself when it came time to take her
O.W.L.s. She received mostly Os and Es as was allowed to
enter the NEWT-level classes. Tonks repeated this feat
for her N.E.W.T.s, scoring the require amount of five.
The standards were so high that the following year after
Tonks was accepted into the program, no one else was.

For three years, she trained. Becoming an Auror was not
an easy feat. It required proficiency in the practical
application of magic and exceptional marks in training.
Most of her training was done under the legendary Auror,
Mad-Eye Moody who was her mentor. Her natural shape
shifting abilities allowed her to pass the Concealment
and Disguise portion of training. All, she claimed,
without doing any bookwork or homework to pass.
Nymphadora did have problems with Stealth and Tracking.
She almost failed that section of training.

Being a child, she was far to
young to be in the first formation of the Order of the
Phoenix. When the Order was formed for a second time,
Tonks was recruited by Mad-Eye Moody. She was his protege
and he was her mentor. Tonks trusted him completely. She
believed that Voldemort was back. Along with several
other new faces, she was recruited into the second
formation of the Order of the Phoenix. It was not
something she advertised. She had to be careful when she
was at the Ministry.

Her position was useful. She could spy on the Ministry
because it was assumed that You-Know-Who had them too.
However, working undercover presented it's own
challenges. No one wanted Scrimgeour asking funny
questions and no one wanted to lose their job.

Her familiarity with the Muggle
world helped the Order to transport Harry Potter to 12
Grimmauld Place. In order to lure the Dursleys away from
their home, Tonks had sent them a very convincing letter
that they had just won the All-England Best Kept
Surburban Lawn Competition. It was a complete
fabrication. The Dursleys believed her letter, however,
and on the evening of the award banquet they departed.

After the Dursleys departed, Tonks along with several
other members of the Order, traveled to Privet Drive in
Little Whinging. Under the cover of darkness, they snuck
into the Dursleys home. Tonks accidentally knocked over a
plate which alerted Harry Potter to the Advanced Guard’s
presence in the house. That was the very first time that
Tonks met Harry Potter. She helped Harry to pack his
things, revealing that she was both a klutz and had also
never gotten the hang on ‘householdy’ spells.
She also explained that she was a Metamorphmagus who
could change her appearance at will.

The Advanced Guard’s assignment of getting Harry to
12 Grimmauld Place passed without incident. Harry had
arrived safely. After Harry was reunited with his friends
and after the Order had their meeting, Tonks dined at 12
Grimmauld Place. She spent the first part of the meal
entertaining Ginny and Hermione with her morphing
abilities. She visited a few times after that. One time
she even helped in dealing with a very old ghoul that was
lurking in one of the upstairs bathrooms. That had been
quite a bit of unexpected excitement.

Tonks was present in 12 Grimmauld Place on the morning
that Harry had his hearing at the Ministry of Magic. It
was there that she revealed that the Order would have to
be more careful. Scrimgeour, the current head the Auror
department, had been asking both Kingsley and she funny
questions. She was also present at the party for Ron and
Hermione, Gryffindor’s new prefects. It was there
that she revealed she had never been one herself thanks
to her inability to misbehave.

She often was assigned guard duty. With her abilities as
a metamorphmagus, Tonks could take on a guard role
without the risk of being found out. When it was time for
Harry and his friends to travel to Hogwarts for the start
of the term, Tonks disguised herself as an old lady. She
did not use a disguise when, close to Christmas, she and
Moody escorted the Weasleys to St. Mungos following an
attack on Arthur Weasley.

At the start of the new term, Remus and Tonks again
escorted Harry and his friends back to Hogwarts via the
Knight Bus. This time she was disguised as tall woman
with dark gray hair. After Remus summoned the bus, the
purple triple-decker bus appeared on the square and Tonks
hastily helped the children climb aboard. Though she had
been forced to be very bossy with Stan Shunpike, the trip
back to Hogwarts passed without incident.

Less than a month later, there was a mass breakout from
the wizard prison, Azkaban. In February, there was a lead
that one of the Lestrange brothers was hidding out in
Glasgow. Tonks, along with her fellow Auror Proudfoot,
traveled to track him down. It was while fighting
Rabastan that Tonks found herself being transported to an
entirely different world.

Personality:

Overall, she is a
good person. She fights on the side of angels. It is her
duty to help and to do what is right. She will lend her
assistance (despite perhaps the other person not wanting
it) if she can. She has a lot of good features such as
being trustworthy, loyal, friendly, dependable, honest,
funny, hard-working, and she’s brave. Tonks never
would have been asked to join the Order if she incapable
of doing the right thing. She never would have been given
the task of being part of the Advanced Guard and guarding
Harry if she couldn’t be trusted nor would she have
volunteered if she wasn’t brave.

She’s smarter than she lets on (most of the time).
In order to qualify for entrance exams, an applicant must
have at least five NEWTs in hard subjects. Aside from
getting high marks on exams, in order to qualify for
Auror training, an applicant must pass a series of
aptitude and personality tests. Tonks never would have
made it if she was going to crack under pressure.
According to her father, her cleverness has allowed her
to escape tough spots before.

Tonks is a friendly person with the admitted inability to
behave. She laughs easily. She tells jokes. She even uses
her morphing powers for dinnertime entertainment. She is
far less serious than her older counterparts in the Order
of the Phoenix which allows her to get along well with
Ginny Weasley and Hermione Granger. Tonks event informed
Ginny on how to check to see if a door had an
Inperturbable Charm put on it, a sign that she doesn't
follow the rules as seriously as some.

She does display some of the trademark qualities of a
Hufflepuff. She is loyal to the Order of the Phoenix. She
is a hard-worker as demonstrated by her career path.
Tonks is a compassionate woman who has never cared about
blood purity, being status, or if someone happens to be a
werewolf. She doesn't like to leave the work to others.
She's a helper but often does not realize that other
people may just prefer for her to sit and relax such as
when she offered to help Molly in the kitchen.

She is painfully honest and without much tact, such as
when she talks to Mad-Eye and asks him who does he know
that lost a buttock and if he cares that washing his eye
is disgusting. Tonks doesn’t feel the need to sugar
coat things so she just tells it like it is. This trait
could be either very good or annoying. It’s not as
though she intentionally wants to be inappropriate, it’s
just that she doesn’t think about it. For example,
after Bill Weasley was injured and Fleur declared that
she still wanted to marry him, Tonks made her intentions
toward Remus perfectly well known. It wasn’t the
time or the place, she said it just the same however.

Tonks is a klutz. If it were possible, she is clumsy
enough that she could trip on her own shadow and impale
herself with her own wand. With Tonks, tripping over her
own shadow just might be possible. At 12 Grimmauld Place,
she is forever tripping over an umbrella stand. She’s
also very good at knocking over plates. She doesn't have
a lot of shame about her clumsiness. Sometimes she jokes
about it.

It should be noted that her powers are tied into her
emotions. Normally, she has no problems with her morphing
abilities. However, when she is depressed and under a
tremendous amount of stress, she loses her ability to
change her appearance.

Tonks also loathes her given name Nymphadora. She is
quick to correct that she prefers to be known by her
surname only. There are only two people she will not
correct, her mother and Albus Dumbledore. However, she
doesn’t mind being called Dora.

Admittedly, Tonks has never gotten the hang of
'householdy' spells. She knows how to pack. She knows
some simple cleaning charms such as Scourgify. However,
she never mastered them while her mother could get socks
to fold themselves. She finds anything that's too clean,
too well-kept just a bit unatural.

She’s a bit over-eager, some would even say that she’s
brash and annoying. While she doesn’t rush stupidly
into danger on a normal basis, it is possible for her
emotions to overrule her common sense. As stated
previously, Tonks is very blunt. Tonks doesn’t mean
to cause harm (most of the time) but sometimes there is a
two-second delay between her mouth and her brain. She
speaks without really thinking about it.

Why do you feel
this character would be appropriate to the setting?:
At her heart, she's a fighter. She's from a world that
has magic. Specifically, Tonks has been trained to fight
dark wizards and creatures. She'll be useful.
