I've happened upon a location that's, for lack of a truly fitting word, magical. through a length of cave walls I've come upon a bowl --a small crater, a large sunken hole-- in the heart of this cave. Its here that my breath was ripped from my lungs, and a lone tear graced my face. Small little nuggets of fools gold filled this vast bowl; they all glistened with false promises of vast riches to those none the wiser. now, I'm no geologist, and under no circumstance would i ever proclaim to be one, but i have comparatively held fools gold and a comparable hunk of real gold and i must admit this fools gold is the most realistic fake gold I've ever seen.

Early on I promised you magic and I probably shouldn't have used that word, but whats said is said and I will not take it back. This cave isn't simply a hole in the ground that collects chunks of fools gold, no, there would be nothing magical about that. Rather it would be a deceitful hole in the earth that tricks passer-bys with deceitful shiny chunks of yellow. Its only by the light of my lantern that I'm able to see the gold, and I'll assume that the gold is more than any other passer-by would hope to cast their light upon. i can easily imagine them filling their pockets with as many as they can hold before running off with delusions of grandeur fluttering in their head. but i and of a unique ilk, i have patience and revel in gazing at something for long periods of time, taking in every moment.

I sat there for hours admiring the cave --the fools gold was of no real concern to me for quite obvious reasons-- after I felt I had seen all there was to see, and admired all there was to admire I turned and began my trek back out but a sound caught my ear, one that is quite hard to describe cause, well, its very much its own unique sound. Curious I turned back to the bowl of gold and cast my light upon it, but nothing seemed amiss. For a reason I cannot pin-point I decided to move closer, more of my light shown upon the gold and it cast a mighty glare upwards in the cave where a small shaft of eroded stone was. when i looked up into the shaft I fell to the floor, my body shook and as I admitted before a tear graced my face. In the shaft, floating far above the pool of yellow light were gems. Huge gems, the size of one's fist, skull ...small dog. These gems floated and danced in this shaft un-seen by likely 99% of those who've entered this cave --I may be so cocky as to assume that I'm the only one who's ever even seen them. Curious I sat and starred at them, there was no feasible way for me to reach these gems for they floated far far above any means I had at my disposal to reach them with. For hours I sat and studied them --the only time in my entire life that I was a geologist. Hours passed and my eyes began to grow strained and sleep began to creep into my mind. I figured I'd be fine if I just slept there during the night and I'd leave in the morning an inspired, changed man.

Just as I began to situate myself for sleep I heard another peculiar sound. Instantly I jumped up, and with lantern in my hand I stood over the pool of fools gold, it sounded as though something was making its way up through the nuggets of gold, I accurately assumed it was another gem. Poised at where it seemed the gem would break the surface i waited. Between the cracks of gold i saw a red gem rising up; i cupped my hands and caught it as it shot out. There was nothing that implied "fool" about this gem, it was gorgeous, the light reflected off of its sides and shown through its body filling the cave with a rich red glow.

I have never returned to the cave, and i have never shown the gem to anyone else. I know the secret is safe where it is. I have faith --over bearing lack of discontent-- that anyone else who happens upon this cave will fill their pockets to the breaking point with the gold only to realize it false upon their return to civilization and never return. perhaps I'm not the only one who's ever seen the gems, but I trust that anyone else who was fortunate enough to see such a beautiful sight would keep it secret, keep it safe. they wouldn't let others go pillage such a marvel of natural workings --gems lighter than air, held down by tons upon tons of fools gold, slowly raising up, and out of their confines to bask in the dark shaft with their own kind. I am more than glad to have seen what I had, and more than willing to take such a divine secret to my grave.
