I seem to use LJ for all my geeky questions. And this behavior keeps getting reinforced, because y'all keep giving me really good answers. I hope the reinforcement continues

1. Running an ssh/sftpd server strikes me as a pretty clunky way of doing this, but it is certainly a way that you could do it. Personally I find Dropbox to be infinitely more convenient than manually reconciling edits made in multiple locations, but YMMV.
1a. Logmein.com still exists, although a full remote desktop session strikes me an even more heavyweight and clunky way to solve this problem

I agree on 1 and 1a. I'd like to know more about the use cases for which you want complete access to files on one machine from multiple locations, and whether you're comfortable with the security risks implied by that. Given that we've previously discussed you run old versions of OSes I would raise an eyebrow right there

I do not understand the bit about manually reconciling edits. The point of the ssh is to *avoid* that --- if I run an ssh server, then wherever I am, I can log onto my home machine and make edits directly on my home machine, so there's always only one version of the file.
This is perhaps a minor point, but the fact that you brought it up makes me wonder whether I totally miscommunicated my intentions.
I think I may have a different model than dr_memory. I was speaking purely about the IP address and agreeing with his assessments on that front. I have no opinion about the SSH

I think you and your father should take heart from Adam Smith's greatly becalming line after Burgoyne was routed in Saratoga in 1777, "There is a great deal of ruin in a nation."
Even when one's opponents win, there is something to be gleaned. Freedom is remarkably resilient. It may out itself in unexpected ways, in different generations, in different places. Anyway, neither of you ought die just yet!
