I'm in the middle of a full-on Lovecraft fad at the moment, triggered by watching Sapphire and Steel last week. I've bought a copy of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth for the X-Box which I'm looking forward to tucking into. Whilst I'm waiting for that to arrive, however, I noticed that our office library has a copy of Alone in the Dark 4

My favourite assignment is still the first one. very Lovecraftian (as was the fourth) - hence the current fad. I loved the very last episode too. Not just for it's downbeat cliffhanger and Silver's possible infidelity but they make reference to the wider mythos which would have been fantastic to have explored.
I still think it has massive potential and could definately do with a Doctor WHO style update. That said, Big Finish have done quite a few audio dramas with David Warner as Steel and (er forgotten her name) as Sapphire.
I've heard the first which was heavily derivative of Assignment II but pretty good never the less.

It's a pity that the PJ Hammond Torchwood eps weren't that great. I'm not sure they were really good examples of what he could do (though the fairies one was fairly decent).

I liked Assignment 2 but it was just soooooo loooong. I thought it was never going to end. I felt about all of them that they could stand to be no more than four episodes. Even assignment 4 (the man with no face) felt long and that did only have 4 episodes. TV was much more liesurely back then though.
As for the Torchwood episodes, they weren't bad episodes, they just suffered from some outdated ideas.
The fairy one was great, especially as they didn't save the kid at the end. The only thing that spoiled it for me was the 'creepy children singing nursery rhymes' music in the background. That's just cheese 101.
The latter one with the circus was spoiled by the circus. It was a great idea reminiscent of Sapphire and Steel - people stepping out of photographs - but the whole ring-master and circus thing again felt cheesy and hackneyed.
