I think I might be one of the few people who doesn't "get" IKEA. The looks alright, but not that great. It isn't that expensive, but it doesn't look that sturdy either. I prefer my furniture to have function rather than form. Some of the most comfortable chairs are the really ratty looking ones.

I don't think I was really tempted by the furniture from there (except maybe the small dining tables). On the other hand, places like Bed Bath and Beyond tend to gouge on basic housewares, so I went to look at the cheap dishes etc.

And of course, for things like rugs, form is a big consideration. :D

But beyond that, I think you're right that there's something of a cult-like mentality surrounding the store. Clever marketing, I suppose.

Yeah. "It's from another country; it must be classy." I agree though. IKEA has nice odds and ends like wastebaskets, small lamps and whatnot.

I found that Target is actually a good place to get the basic housewares, but I tend to focus on the utilitarian rather than how it looks.

My favorite thing about IKEA has to be the "living in ### square feet" display units. I get a lot of ideas that way as to how to decorate.

But the furniture--yeah, more pretty colors than it is sturdy. But if it's functional and I'm going to toss it after a move or two, why not. I tell you, I learned the hard way after my most recent move about why to buy solid wood if at all possible...

But did you also see the little kitty "condos" they have? Blue and red nylon hutches that cats can sleep in, and are decorated with ears and a tail. Doppler and Pi might like that.
