For an afternoon in the Salvatore house, it had been surprisingly quiet.
Caroline stretched in her seat and decided she was bored. It had been virtually silent for an hour now, ever since Stefan and Elena had left to do something cute where she couldn’t watch. (She had pouted fiercely when they told her she wasn’t allowed to tag along. Stelena watching was one of her favorite pastimes.)
She turned to look at Damon, who had spent the past three hours sitting almost motionless on the couch. The only movements he had made had been to turn another page in his book or take a sip of blood from the glass beside him on the end table. A brief smile flitted across Caroline’s face. There was another favorite pastime she could partake in this afternoon. She turned back around and waited a moment or two, just long enough to let her companion think that she had settled back down to the magazine she’d picked up. When she was sure that Damon had relaxed again (because she knew he was more aware of her than he let on), she made her move.
She threw her head back and wailed.
To the ordinary human eye, Damon didn’t move an inch when her voice broke through the silence. Caroline knew better. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him jump just the tiniest bit. She hid a grin and continued her wailing, letting it trail off into a pitiful whining sob. When Damon still didn’t react, she let her voice rise again and this time raised the magazine to her face as if to muffle the sound, which she knew would only make it more annoying.
Damon finally snapped a glare at her and bit out, “What?”
She sniffled. “Brangelina’s breaking up.”
“What?” Damon asked again. This time, his voice held just a touch of disbelief.
“Brad Pitt and Angelina-”
“No, I know who they are,” Damon said quickly. “But why is this so horrifying?” As Caroline opened her mouth to respond, he seemed to realize what he’d just asked. “No, don’t answer that. Better question: why should I care?”
“Because!” she said. Now Damon visibly jumped at her tone of voice. As far as he knew or could tell, this was the most emotional she’d been about anything since Tyler had left Mystic Falls. “Those poor kids! They’re going to be so confused and alone and scared. It’s not every day your dad announces his decision to join the cast of Queer as Folk!”
“Wait, he’s gay?” Damon asked. He laughed. “Stefan owes me two hundred bucks for that.”
That shocked Caroline. “Wait, you two had bets on whether Brad Pitt is gay? I thought you didn’t care about celebrities.”
“We don’t,” he said. “We just occasionally like to make bets on their personal lives out of sheer sadism.”
She cocked her head at him and finally smirked. “No,” was all she said.
“No?” Damon repeated.
“No, I don’t think you do it out of sheer sadism,” Caroline said. “You were far too grumpy when the first part of the Doctor Who season finale aired to be a complete sadist.”
Damon huffed. “You would have to have the blackest, most evil soul in all of history to not be upset by that episode. If I remember correctly, you sobbed until you choked.”
“It was the third time one of them died!” she hissed. “How could I not cry for them? And the poor Doctor, being all locked up in that thing for seemingly forever.” She shook herself out of the memories of the very bleak week she’d had waiting for the next part of the two-parter. “Anyway, that’s not the point! You do care what happens to celebrities. …And television characters.” She gestured at the magazine. “So what do you have to say about this?”
Damon rolled his eyes and groaned long, drawn out, very put-upon groan. And held his hand out for the magazine. Caroline beamed at him and handed it over. She felt in her pocket for her phone and hit the button that would make it vibrate. She pulled it out, pretending to look at a text. By the time Damon had figured out that there was nothing about Brad and Angelina in the magazine at all, an imitation camera shutter sounded.
Before Damon could react, Caroline bolted out of the house. She wondered what Elena and Stefan would have to say about the picture of Damon holding an issue of Tween Weekly…
a/n: So my bestest buddy in the whole entire universe,
jdphoenix, was having a really rough day. I decided that a short Damon/Caroline would be just the thing to cheer her up. I hope it did the same for you, too!
