I can think of an alternative interpretation of that picture. One minute, Steve's standing there and in walks Sheppard. Steve takes a whiff of Sheppard's awful bargain bucket aftershave and gags. He looks at Sheppard and gasps, asking how can Sheppard do this to him.

Steve staggers back and collapses on the floor, then takes some small breaths. Sheppard looks down, perplexed. Steve says...
"I am staying here. There is more clean air near the floor!"
Well... that's what I think...!
