There is a slight difference between the 'old' pilgrimage destinations (Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago) and the new 'Marian' shrines (where visions of the virgin have been authenticated by the church)such as Lourdes, Fatima or Gaudalupe. With the latter, it doesn't matter how you get there: bus, train, taxi. With the former, the journey is often more important than the destination.
